CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Charleston Southern in the first inning and then came from behind to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the ninth. However, a walk-off home run with two outs on the board handed the 7-6 win to the Buccaneers at CSU Ballpark Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs (14-22) led things off with four runs on four hits in the top of the first, including a two-run home run by
Taylor Cothran that capped three extra-base knocks in a row.
Jeffery Brown led things off in the game with a single up the middle and scored from second off a
Jonathan Sabo double to left-center field after stealing his team-leading 11
th base of the season. Sabo then scored off a
Ben Peden double down the left field line before Cothran blasted his fifth-career home run over left field.
The Buccaneers (12-27) had an answer in the bottom of the inning to the tune of three runs off two hits, including an RBI double to right-center field by
Jason Miller and a sacrifice fly by
Christian Maggio.
After the game progressed scoreless for four innings, Sabo sent a rocket of a shot over the fence in right-center field in the top of the sixth for his third home run of the season, setting the score at 5-3.
Despite the continued momentum going in favor of The Citadel, the Bucs took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with three runs off three hits, including a two-RBI single to right field by
Aaron Miller that scored the go-ahead run.
Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs got the tying run safely on and over to third in the top of the ninth with two outs.
William Kinney did not waste the opportunity as he delivered with an RBI single up the middle, scoring
Cameron Jensen.
In the bottom of the inning, the Bucs got the go-ahead run on, but a pop up bunt followed by a throw out at second made it two outs. With the possibility of extras on the line,
Josh Litchfield hit his first home run of the season to right field.
Cothran and Kinney each ended the game with three hits while Brown and Sabo both added two hits. Both Sabo and Cothran added two RBIs and Sabo also crossed the dish twice himself.
Litchfield led the way for the Bucs at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included the one run batted in and three runs scored.
Jordan Merritt started the game on the mound for The Citadel and pitched seven complete innings, scattering three earned runs and four hits while striking out four batters and logging a trio of three-up, three-down frames.
Jordan Buster (L, 3-2) pitched the final 1.2 frames for the Bulldogs and was the pitcher of record.
Ryan Stoudemire (W, 1-5) pitched just one-third of an inning in earning the win.

The Bulldogs will next travel to Spartanburg to take on Wofford for a three-game, Southern Conference series at Russell C. King Field. The Bulldogs and Terriers will kick off the series with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 20 and the series will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. The series finale will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.
