SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite a late push in the final inning that saw The Citadel baseball team load the bases with no outs, the Bulldogs dropped the opening game of a three-game Southern Conference series to Wofford, 5-1 at Russell C. King Field Friday evening.
Wofford (26-13, 7-3 SoCon) scored a single run in the third and three more in the sixth. The Terriers then added a single run in the seventh to close out their scoring push while tallying 11 hits compared to five by the Bulldogs (14-23, 3-7 SoCon).
In the top of the ninth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs off back-to-back walks followed by an infield single by
Ryan McCarthy before
Taylor Cothran sent a long shot to center field, scoring
Michael Ray on the sacrifice fly to break up the shutout.
Jeffery Brown,
William Kinney,
Bryce Leasure, McCarthy and Cothran all had a hit in the game for The Citadel while
McClain Bradley and
Mack Nathanson each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Wofford.
Dylan Spence (L, 3-4) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching five and one-third innings before giving way to
Kyle Smith and
Ryan Stamler.
Adam Scott (W, 6-3) earned the win on the mound for the Terriers, pitching seven scoreless frames while striking out nine batters compared to giving up four hits and a walk.
Matt Ellmyer struck out the side in the top of the eighth and closed out the game with a strikeout to record the final out of the game.

The series will continue at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 with the series finale beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.
