Bulldogs Come Up Short Against Terriers Despite Late Push

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With just one out in the top of the ninth, The Citadel baseball team had runners on the corners and the tying run at the plate. Despite the Bulldogs being poised to do some damage, Wofford turned a double play and ended the threat to capture the second game of the Southern Conference series 8-5 Saturday afternoon.

The Citadel (14-24, 3-8 SoCon) out-hit the Terriers (27-13, 8-3 SoCon) 13-11 led by William Kinney's 3-for-5 effort that included an RBI and a run scored. Taylor Cothran, Jonathan Sabo, Ryan McCarthy and Ben Peden all joined Kinney with multi-hit efforts, each logging two hits and Peden added a pair of runs batted in.

The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Kinney drove in Jeffery Brown with a single to right field. Brown led things off by reaching on an error by the Wofford first baseman and stole second before Cothran moved him over to third, setting up Kinney for the RBI.

The Terriers then took the lead by plating six runs in the bottom of the third off six hits and two Bulldog errors. The Citadel committed four errors in the game while Wofford committed two.

The Citadel was able to close some of the ground in the top of the fourth with a run when Sabo ripped a single to left-center field, scoring fellow senior Kinney from third, but Wofford answered with a two spot in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead back out.

In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs exploded for three more runs to pull to within three, 8-5 of the Terriers. Peden drove in Sabo with an RBI double to right field and Andrew Judkins followed up two at-bats later with a single to left-center field that scored McCarthy and Peden.

In the top of the ninth, Cothran led off the inning with a single through the left side before rounding second and advancing to third two at-bats later off a single by Bryce Leasure. With runners on the corners and the tying run at the plate, The Citadel had a shot with one out on the board, but Wofford turned a double play to end the threat.

Thomas Byelick (L, 0-6) started the game for the Bulldogs and was saddled with the loss wile Austin Higginbotham (W, 5-2) earned the win for Wofford by pitching the first 6.1 innings. Anthony Garcia came on for the final 2.2 innings to record his fifth save of the campaign.
