CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel volleyball team went 1-1 on the final day of the UNC Asheville Invitational, taking a victory against Coppin State and suffering a loss against host, UNC Asheville.
Coppin State Victory
- The Bulldogs took an early 4-3 lead over Coppin State eventually topping the Eagles 25-23. Sharlissa De Jesus recorded six kills and three service aces in the first set. On the defensive side of the ball, Abigail Murn recorded three digs to go along with three team blocks for The Citadel.
- In the second set, the Bulldogs and Eagles entered the first timeout knotted at ten. The Citadel came out of the timeout scoring four consecutive points and would go on to take the second set 25-20. De Jesus continued to pour it on offensively tallying five kills bringing her hitting percentage to .348. Sarah Dobrich joined in on the action recording three kills (.364). Meghan Fuhr would add to the defensive side with 5 digs in the second set victory.
- The Bulldogs closed out the match with a 25-19 victory. Freshman Alicia Roberts recorded three kills in six attempts to go along with two blocks. Sumerlyn Carruthers recorded seven kills and De Jesus finished the match with 19 bringing her hitting percentage to .429.
- Sophomore setter Megan Fuhr tallied 30 assists in the match, her personal best in a three-set match.
- The team ended the match with ten service aces and ten blocks.
Carruthers Named to All-Tournament Team
- Senior Sumerlyn Carruthers was named to the UNC Asheville Invitational All-Tournament Team after tallying 18 kills in her return after redshirting last year.
- "I was nervous coming into the weekend after having not played for the past year but I kept relying on the fundamentals I have developed after playing my whole life," said Carruthers. "The team dynamic this year is different from years past, we are all really having fun when we're on the court together and I think that will carry us a long way."
Coach Zelenock on the Performance
- "Its early season and this tournament gave us the opportunity to move some of the players around and find our groove. It will be good for developing our depth going forward and we are excited about the upcoming season."
UNC Asheville Match
- Asheville took back-to-back sets by a score of 25-18 despite a late push by the Bulldogs in both. The Citadel went on to drop the final set.
- Sophomore setter Megan Fuhr tallied 26 assists while De Jesus picked up a team high 14 kills.

The Bulldogs will travel to Boca Raton to participate in the Florida Atlantic Invitational on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
