Volleyball Sweeps Southern Conference Matches This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel volleyball team swept their matches in the opening weekend of conference play this Friday and Saturday. 

Match Against Western Carolina (The Citadel 3, WCU 2)

  • The Bulldogs got off to an early 12-7 lead in the first set of the match and would go on to finish off the Spartans by a final score of 25-22. After back and forth matches, the Citadel took down the Catamounts in the fifth set by a score of 15-17. Sharlissa De Jesus ended the match tallying 19 kills, three service aces, nine digs and three block assists.
  • Sarah Dobrich put on another impressive performance notching 14 kills and five blocking assists. Freshman Maya Elassal recorded nine kills to go along with three service aces on the day. Megan Fuhr aided in the offense by tallying 50 assists to go along with eight digs and three . Mellanie King recorded a season-high 15 digs on the night while Sumerlyn Carruthers hit for eight kills.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs recorded a season high eleven blocks and Caricia Rodriguez finished the match with 17 digs.
  • The Citadel led the Catamounts in kills, blocks, digs and assists. This marks the first time The Citadel has started 2-0 in the Southern Conference in program history. 
Match Recap Against UNCG (The Citadel 3, UNCG 1)
  • The Bulldogs got off to an early 7-2 lead in the first set of the match up and would go on to finish off the Spartans by a final score of 25-17.Sarah Dobrich ended the match hitting .562 after tallying 10 kills on 16 hits. 
  • UNCG would battle back and take set two by a score of 25-18. The Bulldogs went on to take sets three and four.
  • Sharlissa De Jesus notched another double-double with 11 kills, 13 digs and three solo blocks. Freshman Maya Elassal recorded a new career high with three service aces. Megan Fuhr aided in the offense by tallying 32 assists to go along with 13 digs. Mellanie King recorded a team-high 14 kills on the night. 
  • On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs recorded a season high ten blocks.
  • The Citadel held UNCG to .102 in hitting percentage through four sets.

"I think it is great that we were able to get out to a 2-0 record in such a strong conference. The girls really showed me that they can get off to a great start but also battle back when they are facing adversity. While we are happy with the wins, we will make sure that we tidy up somethings in practice this week to get ready for Wofford this Friday."
