CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team will play four matches over the span of three days this weekend, all on the road. The Bulldogs' weekend starts off with a doubleheader at 25
th-ranked South Carolina on Friday, Jan. 11 and will conclude on Sunday with matches against Morgan State and Georgia Southern in Statesboro.
The Citadel men's tennis team claimed nine singles wins over Florida A&M last weekend with plenty of young players seeing action in the round-robin Florida Collegiate Classic held down in Bradenton, Florida.
Junior
Noah Nawabi, sophomore
Will Graham and freshman
Phillip Quinn all claimed two wins on the week, led by Nawabi's 2-0 record in singles action. Graham and Quinn both went 2-1.
Senior
Roy Hobson, junior
Jack Pyritz and freshman
Josiah Schainblatt all notched their first wins of the season over the weekend as well.
In doubles action, Pyritz and Quinn joined forces to claim the Bulldogs' lone victory, 8-7, over the duo of Hayden and Skoromnyy. The Bulldogs ended the tournament 1-3 in doubles action.
SCOUTING SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina, which opens the season against the Bulldogs for the second-straight year, went 18-10 last season. The Gamecocks enter the 2019 season with a very young roster featuring six freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and one senior. The three returners include junior
Paul Jubb, senior
Yancy Dennis and sophomore
Thomas Brown. Last season, the trio combined for a 50-32 singles record, including 24-11 by Jubb, 26-12 by Dennis and 10-9 by Brown. Jubb went 14-3 at No. 2 singles last season. Dennis went 11-7 at No. 3 and 4-1 at No. 4 singles. Brown went 4-1 at No. 6.
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE
The Bears open the season on Sunday with a morning match against the Eagles of Georgia Southern before tangling with the 'Dogs. Morgan State went 14-5 last season, including a 13-match winning streak from March 3 – April 27. The Bears' roster is made up of four sophomores, one junior and one senior. Junior
Nihit Rawal went 14-4 last season and sophomore
Sebastian Lopez went 15-4 as a true freshman. Rawal went 5-1 at No. 5 singles and 8-3 at No. 6, while Lopez went 6-2 at No. 3 singles and 9-2 at No. 4. Senior
Arjun Ramakrishnan split time at No. 1 singles last season with
Lucas Krusinski, who graduated following the season.
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Georgia Southern opens the 2019 campaign on Thursday, Jan. 10 with road matches at No. 20 Florida State and Florida A&M. The Eagles will then face off against Morgan State on Sunday morning before taking on the 'Dogs in the afternoon. Last season, GS went 13-13 overall, including rattling off 10 wins in a row from Feb. 25 – March 18. Last season, sophomore
Pascal Wagemaker and juniors
Stefano Di Aloy and
Diego Finkelstein led the Eagles with a combined 34-22 record. As a freshman, Wagemaker went 13-7 and ended the season as Southern's No. 4 singles player. Di Aloy went 11-8, including 8-7 at No. 1 singles and 3-1 at No. 2. Finkelstein went 10-7, playing anywhere from No. 2 singles to No. 4.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will remain on the road for a pair of matches at Clemson on Saturday, Jan. 19. The doubleheader with the Tigers will get underway at 10 a.m.
