Tennis Set to Play Matches at Clemson, East Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team will continue the current road swing to open the season with a doubleheader at Clemson on Saturday, Jan. 19 followed by a pair of matches against James Madison and East Carolina on East Carolina's campus on Monday, Jan. 21.

The weekend of four matches will feature the season openers for all three of the Bulldogs' opponents.

Last weekend, The Citadel played two matches against South Carolina and one against Georgia Southern. In the match against the Eagles,  the Bulldogs were led by Noah Nawabi at No. 3 singles and Willem van Zyl at No. 4 as both claimed a set from their opponents. Nawabi fell 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 to Diego Finkelstein, while van Zyl dropped his match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Pascal Wagemaker.

Roy Hobson and Phillip Quinn also had strong performances at No. 1 and No. 5 singles. Hobson fell 6-2, 6-4 to JC Alcala and Quinn fell 6-3, 6-4 to Murphy McCullough.

Jack Pyritz took on Antonio Muniz in No. 2 singles, falling 6-1, 6-0, and Will Graham rounded out the match with a 7-6, 6-0 loss to Santiago Suarez at No. 6.

SCOUTING CLEMSON
The matches at Clemson will be contested inside the Tigers' indoor facility and will be the season opener for the Tigers. The Tigers return four players from last season's singles action, led by junior Simon Baudry's 11-9 record, including a 12-5 mark at No. 2. Sophomore Yizhou Liu went 14-6 last season, including a 6-1 mark at No. 3, 6-5 at No. 4 singles and 2-0 at No. 5. The other two Tigers who return from last season are junior Carlos Kelaidis and senior Reed Raideau.

SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
The Pirates' roster features a veteran lineup, including senior Ronny Georgi and junior Javier Renones. Both Georgi and Renones won at least 20 matchups last season, including a 20-7 record for Georgi and a 24-7 record by Renones. Georgi went 4-0 at No 2 singles and 11-3 at No. 3, while Renones went 15-1 at No. 6 singles and 3-1 at No. 5. Redshirt junior Austin Allen went 12-3 last season, while senior Vlad Anghel went 19-16. Sophomore Wisse Jonker went 18-3 a season ago and senior Will Bissett finished the 2018 campaign with a 13-5 singles record.

SCOUTING JAMES MADISON
James Madison's roster features one senior, four juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. Pierre Kohler is the lone senior on the squad for the Dukes followed by juniors Paul Mendoza, Josh Raymundo, Damon Roberts and Tate Steinour. Sophomores Gonzalo Adis and Alvaro Arce, and freshmen Eugene Clur and William Karpinski round out the roster.

UP NEXT
Following the matches against JMU and East Carolina, the Bulldogs will head to Georgia Tech for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Jan. 23 before opening the month of February at the USC Sumter Invitational on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2.
