Bulldogs Travel to Georgia Tech for Midweek Doubleheader

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team will wrap up the current stretch of six matches in five days with a doubleheader at Georgia Tech on Wednesday, Jan. 23. The first match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.

Most recently, the Bulldogs took on James Madison and East Carolina in a pair of matches in Greenville, North Carolina at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center. The 'Dogs dropped both matches by a score of 7-0, but several individuals put forth strong efforts.

In the first match of the day, Gavin Stewart forced his No. 5 singles match to go to three sets and a tiebreaker, falling 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 to JMU's Eugene Clur. In the same match, Willem van Zyl and Noah Nawabi each took five games from their singles opponents. Van Zyl fell 6-3, 6-2 to Paul Mendoza at No. 3 singles, while Nawabi dropped his No. 4 singles match 6-3, 6-2 to Damon Roberts.

In the match against ECU, the doubles tandem of Nawbai and freshman Phillip Quinn started the match off with a 7-5 win at No. 3 over Austin Allen and Diogo Marques. Nawabi continued his strong day in singles play, forcing a tiebreaker in both of his sets at No. 4 against Will Biessett before falling 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-2). Quinn also had a strong performance as he forced his No. 6 singles matchup with Allen to a tiebreaker in the second set, falling 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). At No. 1 singles, senior Roy Hobson took seven games from Vlad Anghel, falling 6-3, 6-4.

SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH
Wednesday's matches against the Yellow Jackets will serve as the first true head-to-head matches of the season for Georgia Tech. The Jackets opened 2019 by participating in the MLK Tournament in Atlanta, Jan. 19 – Jan. 21. Tech will be led this season by five returners, including seniors Phillip Gresk and Andrew Li, juniors Carlos Divar and Chris Yun, and sophomore Brandon Freestone. In the MLK Tournament, Divar defeated the No. 2 player in the country, Jan Zielinski of Georgia, 6-3, 6-4. Last season, Divar went 16-18 overall and 7-14 at No. 1 singles in duals. Freestone went 5-7 last season, including 2-1 in duals No. 6 singles. Gresk went 14-18 overall in 2018 with a 4-7 record at No. 3 singles and a 2-0 record at No. 4. Li went 8-13 overall last season with a 2-2 record at No. 5 and a 3-0 record at No. 6 singles. Yun ended 2018 with a 15-12 overall record, including 2-2 at No. 3, 3-3 at No. 5 and 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

After Wednesday's doubleheader in Atlanta, The Citadel will be off for over a week before traveling to Sumter for the USC Sumter Invitational, Friday, Feb. 1 – Saturday, Feb. 2.
