Bulldogs Drop Tough Game to Furman

CHARLESTON, S.C. – With 3:31 to go in Thursday night's Southern Conference men's basketball game between The Citadel and Furman, Zane Najdawi knocked down a pair of free throws to pull the Bulldogs to within 6 points of the visiting Paladins. Despite having clawed back from being down as many as 19 earlier in the half, the Bulldogs were unable to close the gap any further as Furman closed the game with four unanswered points to claim a 71-61 win.

KEY PLAYS AND STATS
  • Furman led wire to wire after winning the opening tipoff.
  • The Paladins jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of action and built up a six-point, 10-4 lead nearly six minutes in.
  • With 10:42 to play in the first half, Lew Stallworth scored his first points of the game to knot the score at 13-all, but Furman went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to establish a 12-point, 27-15 lead capped by an Alex Hunter layup.
  • Kaiden Rice knocked down three free throws with 4:11 to go in the first half, and the Bulldogs began to chip away at the Paladin lead, pulling to within four twice, including when Najdawi hit a 3-pointer with 3:34 to play in the period, and again when Quayson Williams converted two free throws nearly a minute later.
  • After Furman took a 34-29 lead into the locker room at halftime, the Paladins started the second half on a 16-2 run, going up 50-31 in the first five minutes of the second half.
  • With 10:56 to play in regulation, Rice converted another pair of free throws to begin cutting into the Furman lead, and with 9:04 to Stallworth made it an eight-point, 52-44 game with a layup.
  • After Furman found a way to stretch the lead back out to 11, 67-56 with 4:42 to play, Najdawi gave the 'Dogs a quick five-point spurt to set the score at 67-61.
  • Despite getting a stop on the other end of the court, the Bulldogs turned the ball over and the Paladins scored the final four points of the game to notch the 10-point win.
  • The Citadel shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the field, but struggled from 3-point range as they converted just five of their 19 attempts (.263).
  • Furman shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and made 13 of their 40 3-point attempts (.325).
  • The Citadel committed 19 turnovers, including 12 in the first half, which Furman turned into 15 points. The Paladins had just four points off the Bulldogs' first 12 turnovers, while the 'Dogs scored 12 points off the Paladins' first six turnovers in the first half. The Citadel scored 20 points for the entire game off the Paladins' 15 turnovers.
  • Stallworth led the Bulldogs with 19 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Najdawi was second on the team with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Rice ended his night with 13 points off the bench.
  • Furman's Jordan Lyons led all scorers with 20 points, while Matt Rafferty, who entered the game averaging 17.7 points and 9.1 rebounds, was held to eight points and 10 boards.

NOTABLES
  • The Bulldogs' five made 3-pointers against Furman are the fewest by the Bulldogs since making five last season in a 92-73 loss at North Carolina A&T on Nov. 15, 2017.
  • The 19 3-point attempts are the fewest for The Citadel since the 2015-16 team made 19 attempts from beyond the arc in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament in a 71-69 loss to Mercer on March 4, 2016.
  • With his five assists, Stallworth moved into sole possession of 10th in program history with 129 on the year.
  • With his 19 points, Stallworth now has 860 career points.
  • Najdawi moved up another spot in The Citadel record book Thursday night with nine rebounds. He is now fourth all time with 673 career boards, moving ahead of Matt Newman (1994-98).

The Bulldogs will wrap up the current three-game homestand on Saturday, Feb. 2 with a 1 p.m. game against Wofford before heading to Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 9 for a4 p.m. game.
