Bulldogs Drop SoCon Game, 101-85, on the Road at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Citadel men's basketball team led by three, 46-43 at halftime, but Furman came out in the second half and shot over 50 percent, and scored 58 points in the period, to down the Bulldogs, 101-85, inside Timmons Arena in Southern Conference action.

KEY STATS
  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead as Kaiden Rice converted his first two 3-pointers. The sophomore sharpshooter ended the game with a game-high five treys and 18 points.
  • The two teams swapped the lead back and forth 10 times in the first half alone.
  • Matt Rafferty gave Furman a six-point, 38-32 lead with 3:09 to go in the first half, but the Bulldogs remained patient and chipped away at the lead.
  • With 1:03 to go in the period, Lew Stallworth hit a jumper in the paint to knot the game at 43-all, and a few seconds later, Rice gave the Bulldogs a three-point lead with his fourth trey of the half, a wide-open bucket from the left corner.
  • The Citadel shot 50.0 percent (18-of-36) in the opening half and shot 36.4 percent (8-off-22) from beyond the 3-point arc. In comparison, the Paladins managed to shoot 40.0 percent (16-of-40) from the field and just 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from long range.
  • The second half was a completely different story as Furman came out established a five-point, 62-57 lead almost five minutes in.
  • With 14:04 remaining in regulation, Alex Reed knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two-points, 64-62.
  • With 7:07 to go, Clay Mounce converted the front end of two free throws to make it a 10-point, 83-73 lead.
  • Reed hit a jumper in the paint with 6:01 to go, but it was the last points for the Bulldogs for the next 4:06. The Bulldogs went 0-for-8 during that stretch, while the Paladins scored 12 straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
  • Despite the drought, the Bulldogs ended the game shooting 46.4 percent (32-of-69) from the field, including 32.6 percent (14-of-43) from beyond the 3-point arc.
  • The Paladins shot 53.8 percent (21-of-39) from the field for the second half to finish the game shooting 46.8 percent (37-of-79) from the field. Furman connected on 13 of their 38 3-point attempts.
  • Furman went to the free throw line 21 times compared to just eight free throw attempts by The Citadel. The Paladins connected on just 66.7 percent (14) of their free throws, while the 'Dogs converted 87.5 percent (seven) of their attempts.
  • Stallworth led the 'Dogs with 23 points and six assists with Reed adding 20 points off 8-of-11 shooting (.727).
  • Zane Najdawi recorded his fourth double-double of the season, and 13th of his career, off 11 points and 10 rebounds. Najdawi had just three double-double performances all of last season.

NOTABLES
  • Furman climbed as high as 24th in the nation in the AP poll earlier this season and is currently ranked fifth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25.
  • For the eighth game in a row, at least three of the Bulldogs' starting five finished with double-digit points as Stallworth (23), Reed (20), Rice (18) and Najdawi (11) all accomplished the feat.
  • With his 11 points, Najdawi climbed another two spots in The Citadel record book, from eighth to sixth with 1,400 career points.
  • Najdawi finished with 10 rebounds, moving him up from ninth to eight in program history for career boards with 620.
  • With his 18 points Saturday afternoon, Rice now has 310 career points.
  • With his 23 points scored against Furman, Stallworth eclipsed the 700-point mark for his collegiate career. He now has 719 career points to go along with 310 career assists, including 94 assists this season.
  • Reed's 20-point performance was the second of the season for the sophomore, two shy of his career-high of 22 set earlier this season at James Madison. He also matched his career high for 3-pointers made with four. Reed now has 297 career points.

COMING UP
The Citadel returns home next week for a pair of games inside McAlister Field House. The Bulldogs will first host ETSU on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. before Western Carolina comes calling on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
