CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel mixed and women's rifle teams will host a pair of familiar, Southern Conference foes this weekend as 21
st-ranked UAB and 24
th-ranked Georgia Southern travel to Charleston for a tri-match at the Inouye Marksmanship Center on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The day will be divided up in to two relays with action getting underway at 8 a.m.
BULLDOGS NATIONALLY RANKED
The Bulldogs' mixed rifle team was ranked 22
nd in the nation in the first Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll released earlier this week. The women were ranked 29
th. West Virginia is currently the No. 1 team in the nation followed by Air Force, 2018 national champion Kentucky, 2019 NCAA champion TCU and Ole Miss rounds out the top five.
LAST TIME OUT
Led by career days by senior
Alexander McAlear and sophomore
Emily Perkins, The Citadel mixed rifle team opened the 2019-20 home schedule with a 4544-4445 win over Wofford's mixed team at the Inouye Marksmanship Center Saturday.
McAlear posted a career-best 1151 aggregate score, including matching his career best in smallbore with a 569.
Junior
Max Brabston finished second overall with an aggregate score of 1141, while freshman
Cameron Bates finished fourth with an 1126. Perkins rounded out the top five with a career-best aggregate score of 1126, and fellow sophomore
Jack Wittman posted a career-best 1094 aggregate score.
Wofford's
Daniel Wesson was the highest finishing Terrier with an 1128.
SCOUTING UAB
21
st-ranked UAB has competed in just one match so far this season, taking on Georgia Southern and Wofford in Statesboro, Georgia on Sept. 28. The Blazers finished first of the three teams with an aggregate score of 4550.
The 2019 Southern Conference champions, the Blazers feature a balanced, veteran team comprised of three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. Sophomores
Sophia Flores and
Jordan Blankenship led the way for the Blazers in the season-opener with aggregate scores of 1142 and 1136. Freshman
Amy Kohan notched the team's top smallbore score with a 564 and senior captain
Lilly Vonderau led the way in air rifle with a 583.
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The 24
th-ranked Eagles of Georgia Southern opened the season two weeks ago by hosting Wofford and UAB. The Eagles finished second behind UAB and ahead of Wofford with an aggregate score of 4453.
The Eagles feature a very young team in 2019 made up of four freshmen and one senior. Freshman
Ashley Judson led the way for Georgia Southern in the season-opening match, posting an aggregate score of 1129 that included the team's best smallbore (554) and air rifle scores (575). Senior
Lydia Odlin was second on the team with an aggregate score of 1114.
COMING UP
The Citadel will be off from outside competition next week. The Bulldogs will next host a pair of top-10 opponents in a two-day tri match. The 'Dogs will welcome seventh-ranked Navy and No. 9 NC State to Charleston on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27.
