CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team faced off against the No. 1 team in the Southern Conference Friday afternoon and never backed down. Despite going down 5-1 midway through the second half, the Bulldogs continued to battle and fight, ending the day with an impressive three goals in the 5-3 loss.

17' – Caitlyn Reilly scored off a pass from
Jasmine Greene to begin the scoring.
21' – Isabella Gutierrez made it 2-0 a few minutes later after
Amanda Baker sent a cross inside the box on the opposite corner.
25' – Suzuka Yosue drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box and chipped in her free kick for her third goal of the season.
28' – Greene pushed the advantage back out to two goals at 3-1 when she dribbled across the field and scored her fourth goal of the season.
39' – Erin O'Hearn set the advantage at 4-1 with a penalty kick off a Citadel handball in the box.
54' – Julia Nicholas scored the Paladins' final goal as she collected a rebounded bobbled ball in the box.
69' – Mel Mikoy scored her first goal of the season off a set piece from 30 yards out.
81' – Emily Mason scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Yosue to pull the 'Dogs to within two goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Furman outshot the Bulldogs 20-7, including 13-2 in the first half.
- Furman held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks, including 7-0 in the first half.
- Seven different Bulldogs recorded The Citadel's seven shots.
- Freshman Brie Sikes started the game in net for the Bulldogs and made two saves, while sophomore Maddie Somogyi came in late in the first half and recorded three saves on the afternoon.
NOTES
- When Yosue scored her goal in the 25th minute, it marked the first goal Furman had given up in over 640 minutes of action. The Paladins came into the game riding a six-game shutout streak that included shutting out Chattanooga, UNCG, VMI, ETSU, Western Carolina and Wofford. The streak dated back to the first half of their 1-1 draw at Samford on Sept. 27. The Paladins have shut out nine different opponents this season.
- With three goals scored against Furman, The Citadel joins UNC Wilmington, Oregon, NC State and Georgia as the only teams to score multiple goals on Furman this season. Only Oregon and NC State matched the Bulldogs' offensive output with three goals scored.
- With Mikoy scoring her first goal of the season, the Bulldogs have now had a program-record 15 different goal scorers this season. The 15 different scorers leads the Southern Conference as UNCG boasts 14 and Chattanooga and Western Carolina each boast 11. Eight of those 15 goal scorers have scored multiple goals, matching Chattanooga and Western Carolina for the most in the conference.
- With her third goal scored of the season, Yosue is now tied for 16th in program history for goals by a freshman. Fellow freshman Hayley Long also has three goals on the year.
- Yosue recorded her team-leading seventh assist of the year Friday, matching the program record for assists by a freshman and overall single-season assists.
- Friday marked the first game for Yosue to score a goal and record an assist in the same contest.
- Yosue boasts 13 points this season, a mark that has her tied for 11th in program history for points by a freshman. She is tied with Jannel Johnson's 2012 season and Jessa Scott's 2007 season.
- With her three saves Friday afternoon, Somogyi now boasts 47 for the year. She is seventh in program history for saves by a sophomore goalkeeper and is just one away from matching Martha Skinner's 2003 season for sixth.
- Somogyi has played over 858 minutes, a mark that has her fifth in program history for minutes by a sophomore.
NEXT UP
The Bulldogs will close out the regular season at home on Sunday, Oct. 27 with a 2 p.m. game against Wofford. The first 150 fans to WLI Field will receive free ice cream sandwiches.
