CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team heads into the 2019 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championships as the No. 9 seed and will travel to No. 8 seed ETSU on Wednesday, Oct. 30 for a 7 p.m. game.
COMING UP
The winner of Wednesday's game will travel to Birmingham, Alabama to face No. 1 seed and six-time reigning regular-season champion Samford. That game will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. Eastern.
BREAKING FURMAN'S TREND
When freshman
Suzuka Yosue scored her goal in the 25th minute of the game against Furman on Oct. 25, it marked the first goal Furman had given up in over 640 minutes of action. The Paladins came into the game riding a six-game shutout streak that included shutting out Chattanooga, UNCG, VMI, ETSU, Western Carolina and Wofford. The streak dated back to the first half of their 1-1 draw at Samford on Sept. 27. The Paladins have shut out nine different opponents this season.
IN GOOD COMPANY
With three goals scored against Furman on Oct. 25, The Citadel joins UNC Wilmington, Oregon, NC State, Georgia and Mercer as the only teams to score multiple goals on Furman this season. Only Oregon and NC State matched the Bulldogs' offensive output with three goals scored against the Paladins.
SPREADING THE SCORING AROUND
With
Mel Mikoy scoring her first goal of the season on Oct. 25 against Furman, the Bulldogs have now had a program-record 15 different goal scorers this season. The 15 different scorers leads the Southern Conference as UNCG boasts 14 and Chattanooga and Western Carolina each boast 11. Eight of those 15 goal scorers have scored multiple goals, matching Chattanooga and Western Carolina for the most in the conference.
ROTH TAKING SHOTS
Junior
Hannah Roth is second in the conference with 56 shots taken, an average of 3.50 per game. Roth's 56 shots taken this season are the third most by a junior in program history. Her 143 career shots taken rank fourth in program history.
SUZU IN THE LEAGUE
Yosue is tied for third in the conference with seven assists and is in sole possession of second in the league with 0.47 assists per game. Yosue is tied for 13
th in the league with 13 points (3 goals, 7 assists) and she is 11
th with 0.87 points per game.
SUZU MAKING MOVES
With her third goal of the season coming on Oct. 25 against Furman, Yosue is now tied for 16th in program history for goals by a freshman. Fellow freshman
Hayley Long also has three goals on the year. Yosue also recorded her team-leading seventh assist of the year on Oct. 25, matching the program record for assists by a freshman and overall single-season assists. Yosue boasts 13 points this season, a mark that has her tied for 11th in program history for points by a freshman. She is tied with
Jannel Johnson's 2012 season and
Jessa Scott's 2007 season.
DIXIE SCORING GOALS
Junior
Logan Dix is currently tied for 11
th in the conference with five goals scored. She is ninth with 0.36 goals scored per outing.
BURGESS WITH THE ASSIST
Junior
Ellie Burgess is currently tied for 11
th in the conference with four assists.
MADDIE WITH THE SAVE
With her three saves on Oct. 25 against Furman,
Maddie Somogyi now boasts 47 for the year. She is seventh in program history for saves by a sophomore goalkeeper and is just one away from matching
Martha Skinner's 2003 season for sixth. Somogyi has played over 858 minutes, a mark that has her fifth in program history for minutes by a sophomore.
BREAKING THE TREND
Junior
Maria Contreras' goal in the 37th minute of the Oct. 20 game at ETSU broke a stretch of over 340 minutes where the Bulldogs had failed to score a goal.
MAFER WITH THE SCORE
Contreras boasts three goals on the year, matching Long and Yosue for second on the team. Contreras' three goals scored as a junior has her tied for ninth in program history. She now boasts eight points, 11
th most in program history for points scored by a junior.
THE HISTORY WITH ETSU
ETSU is 9-1-1 all-time against The Citadel, including a 3-1 win by the Bucs earlier this season. Last season, the Bulldogs earned their first win over the Bucs with a 2-1, double-overtime victory in Charleston, breaking a five-game winning streak by ETSU.
SCOUTING THE BUCS
ETSU is the No. 8 seed heading into the tournament, and enters the game with a 5-10-4 record, including 3-5-2 at home. Since the two teams met on Oct. 20 in Johnson City, the Bucs tied VMI 0-0 and dropped their regular-season finale, 2-0, at UNCG. In the last eight games, ETSU has posted a 1-5-2 record. ETSU has been led by
Sarah Connoly's six goals off 41 shots, including a team-high 22 on frame.
Maegan Sours and
Beatrice Abati both head into the week with three goals scored, while
Anjela Kricak,
Sydney Cavendar,
Pamela Penaloza and
Momoko Horiuchi each boast two goals scored. Kricak leads the team with six assists, while Abati leads the way with 47 shots, but only 17 on goal. In goal,
Tess Mrozek has logged over 1,707 minutes and brings a 1.05 goals against average and 74 saves into the match.
