Rifle Travels to #12 Jacksonville State for Saturday Match

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel mixed and women's rifle teams will close out the Fall 2019 portion of the 2019-20 season this weekend by traveling to No. 12 Jacksonville State on Saturday.

The day will get underway at 9 a.m. Eastern. There will be two relays.

BULLDOGS RANKED 23rd IN NATION
The Bulldogs' mixed rifle team is ranked 23nd in the nation in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) poll released earlier this week. The women's team is ranked 29th. TCU took over the top spot in the rankings from West Virginia, bumping the Mountaineers to second. The rest of the top 10 includes Kentucky, Air Force, Ole Miss, Army, Akron, Navy, Alaska Fairbanks and Murray State.

LAST TIME OUT
For the second weekend in a row, the 23rd-ranked Citadel mixed rifle team hosted a pair of top-20 opponents Saturday at the Inouye Marksmanship Center. The Bulldogs, Gamecocks and Nighthawks participated in one relay with JSU taking top honors with an aggregate score of 4654. UNG finished second with a 4561 and The Citadel wrapped up the day third with a 4504.

Jacksonville State swept the top four spots behind Zach Schmidt and Mackenzie VanPatten's similar 1169s. Schmidt took top honors in smallbore with a 583 and posted a solid 586 in air rifle, but it was VanPatten who took the top spot in air with a 592.

The highest finisher for the Bulldogs was sophomore Emily Perkins with a 10th-place 1138.

SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE STATE
Jacksonville State has competed four times so far this season, including a pair of matches last weekend in Charleston against the Bulldogs and North Georgia. Against Murray State and UT Martin, the Gamecocks posted an aggregate score of 4640 and followed that up at home with a 4636 against Morehead State. Last weekend in Charleston, JSU recorded a season-best 4654 against The Citadel's mixed team and UNG before dropping off a bit the next day with a 4623 against the Bulldog women.

The Gamecocks have been led by VanPatten, Schmidt and Owen Goad. VanPatten boasts two of Jacksonville State's top three aggregate scores, including an 1171 and an 1169. Schmidt posted an 1169 last weekend to lead the Gamecocks. Goad posted the team's fourth-best aggregate score of the season on Oct. 26 with an 1162.

COMING UP
Following this weekend's match, the Bulldogs will be off until Jan. 25 when VMI travels to Charleston for the first match of the 2020 portion of the season.
