Bulldog Tennis to Close Road Swing with Three Matches

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team will close out the current road swing this weekend with three matches, including a makeup date at Southern Wesleyan.

The Bulldogs will first travel to Central, South Carolina to play the Southern Wesleyan Warriors at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The match with the Warriors was originally slated for Friday, Feb. 22, but rain forced a change to the schedule.

The Citadel raqueteers will then head up into North Carolina for a pair of matches on Monday, March 4. The 'Dogs will play Penn in a neutral-site match in Raleigh at 9 a.m. and then travel the short distance to Greensboro for a Southern Conference matchup with UNC Greensboro at 4 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Citadel men's tennis team split a pair of matches to conclude their time in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday after having the first three matches of the weekend postponed or cancelled due to rain. The Bulldogs started the day off with a hard-fought loss at the hands of five-time NAIA National Champions Georgia Gwinnett before bouncing back with an 8-1 win over Oglethorpe.

The day's second match, which was an exhibition for Oglethorpe, started with the Bulldogs sweeping through doubles action over the Stormy Petrels, including an 8-2 win at No. 2 by Will Graham and Roy Hobson over Zoe Raymond and Calvin Schneider.

At No. 1 doubles, Gavin Stewart and Willem van Zyl teamed up for an 8-3 win over Walker Benson and Richard Johnson, while Phillip Quinn and Noah Nawabi bested Connor Sisson and Michael Santaloci, 8-7, at No. 3.

In singles action, van Zyl wasted little time with Raymond at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. Nawabi and Stewart also easily handled their matches at No. 3 and No. 5 with both claiming 6-2, 6-1 wins. Nawabi defeated Johnson and Stewart took down Matthew Magee.

At No. 2 singles, Jack Pyritz bested Santaloci 6-1, 6-3, and at No. 6 singles, Quinn defeated Schneider 6-2, 6-2. No. 1 singles saw Oglethorpe's Benson win the first set, 5-7, before Hobson put the match away with 6-1, 6-4 wins in the next two sets.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN WESLEYAN
Southern Wesleyan is 1-5 on the year, having defeated Brevard at home 4-3 on Feb. 2. The Warriors have played four matches at home and are 1-3. SWU is a very young team, featuring three freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors. The senior leadership comes from juniors Peter Kovats and Ben Smith. Sophomore Joseph Olatunji is joined by freshmen Nathan HolleySarvesh Mariaand Leonard Sanders as the underclassmen contributing this season.

SCOUTING PENN
Penn comes into the weekend with a 10-2 record, including 1-2 on the road. The Quakers opened the season with a 7-0 win over Navy, and after a 6-1 loss at 11th-ranked Baylor, Penn rattled off eight wins in a row. Most recently, Penn defeated William & Mary, 4-3, on the road. Penn features a very balanced team highlighted by seniors Kyle Mautner and Dmitry Shatalin. The duo is joined by juniors Max Cancilla, Kaden Funk and Robert Smithline. The Quakers also have four sophomores and four freshmen on the roster.

SCOUTING UNC GREENSBORO
UNC Greensboro is 1-4 on the year, including 0-1 in SoCon play, and 1-3 at home. The Spartans' lone win on the year came on Feb. 8, 4-3 over Radford. UNCG opened SoCon action with a 7-0 home loss to ETSU on Feb. 22. The Spartans are scheduled to play Winthrop, James Madison and Duquesne all before hosting the Bulldogs. The Spartans' roster is fairly young, featuring just one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. Ian Melnik is the lone senior on the team, and he is joined by juniors Logan Blaser and Jack Burkill as the upper classmen. Sophomores Eric Whisnant, Ollie Palmer and Nico Grewe add experience to the Spartans' lineup.

UP NEXT
Following this weekend's three road matches, the Bulldogs will play their next 14 matches at home, beginning with a doubleheader against Methodist on Saturday, March 9. The 'Dogs will then host Lehigh and Richmond on Sunday, March 10. The Bulldogs' home matches will be played at the Jack Adams Tennis Center this season.
