CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team hosts Mercer and USC Sumter on Friday, March 22 at the Jack Adams Tennis Center. The Bulldogs will first take on the Bears in a Southern Conference match at 1:30 p.m. before turning their attention to the Fire Ants at 5 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a pair of hard-fought matches Sunday at the Jack Adams Tennis Center. The Bulldog netters began the day with a 5-2 loss in SoCon action to Chattanooga. The 'Dogs then took Marist down to the wire, falling 4-3.
Freshman
Phillip Quinn claimed another pair of wins in singles, improving to 14-11 on the year, including nine of his last 10. Quinn started Sunday off with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over UT Chattanooga's Jacob Marshall at No. 6 singles. Quinn's day wrapped up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Marist's
Kian Yazdi at No. 5 singles in the day's second match.
Sophomore
Gavin Stewart has won six of his last 10 singles matches, including a pair of matches last weekend against Radford and Chattanooga, both at No. 5 singles.
SCOUTING MERCER
Mercer enters Friday with a 7-9 record, including 0-1 in Southern Conference action and 3-9 in road matches. The Bears have won four of their last five matches, defeating Stetson and Jacksonville State on the road before besting Cleveland State and USC Upstate at home. The Bears most recently fell, 4-3, at Wofford
. Olivier Stuart boasts a 9-4 record, including having gone 8-4 at No. 1.
Nicholas Guillon and
Stathis Tsiranidis both bring matching 8-7 records into Friday's match. Guillon has played most of his matches at No. 2 singles, while Tsiranidis has spent most of his time at No. 3 and No. 4.
SCOUTING USC SUMTER
The Citadel and USC Sumter played back on Feb. 1. The Bulldogs claimed the match in Sumter, 8-1.
Noah Nawabi and Quinn led the charge with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles. Nawabi,
Willem van Zyl, Stewart and Quinn all won their singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Quinn over
Samuel Cruz at No. 6.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will have next week off before hosting Davidson and Benedict on Sunday, April 7. The pair of matches will mark the beginning of a stretch of four home matches over the span of three days for the 'Dogs.
