‘Dogs Set to Take on ETSU in SoCon Tennis Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team will travel to Macon, Georgia this week for the 2019 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships hosted by Mercer.

The Bulldogs are the No 8 seed and will go up against top-seeded ETSU in the opening round of the tournament. The matchup is slated to get under way at 1 p.m.

The winner of the match between the 'Dogs and the Bucs will play the winner of the match between No. 4 Wofford and No. 5 Samford on Friday, April 19 at 2 p.m.

QUINN NAMED TO SOCON ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM
Phillip Quinn was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team, it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. The award is the first post-season plaudit for a Citadel men's tennis player since Artemie Amare earned All-Freshman Team honors in 2015. A native of Dallas, Texas and former four-star recruit, Quinn is tied with sophomore Gavin Stewart for most singles victories on the team at 15. Eleven of Quinn's wins have come at No. 6 singles. Quinn has also been a part of 12 doubles victories, including 11 with junior Noah Nawabi. Quinn's 15 singles victories are tied for 10th most in program history since 2000, while his 12 doubles wins are tied for 17th.

LAST TIME OUT
The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a Southern Conference match, 6-1, at ETSU on Saturday afternoon. The match was delayed from starting on time due to heavy rains in the area, but once the storms moved through, the two teams were able to squeeze the match in. Sophomore Gavin Stewart claimed the Bulldogs' lone point on the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Chris Mikrovas.

SCOUTING ETSU
ETSU heads into the tournament with a 17-4 record, including a 6-4 mark in road matches. The Bucs went 7-0 in SoCon play and are currently riding an eight-match winning streak. In their current streak, ETSU has surrendered just nine points, outscoring their opponents . ETSU is led by two seniors and a trio of juniors complimented by three sophomores and three freshmen. The seniors include Sergi Fontcuberta and David Gonzalez.
