Bulldogs Drop Tough Decision in Opener

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – An unearned run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as The Citadel fell 4-3 to Western Carolina in the first game of a three game Southern Conference Thursday afternoon at Hennon Stadium.

How it Happened
  • WCU got on the board in the first inning after a two-out chopper up the middle was followed by a RBI single into the hole at short from Andrew Bullock
  • The Catamounts added to their lead in the second after loading the bases and scoring on a fielder's choice from Daylan Nanny.
  • The Bulldogs got the bats rolling in the fourth inning as Ben Peden singled to start the inning, and was followed by base hits from Ches Goodman and Cole Simpson to load the bases.
  • After falling behind in the count, Wesley Lane ripped a double off the base of the wall in left to clear the bases and give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game.
  • WCU tied the game in the sixth after a leadoff double came around to score on a two-out single through the left side off the bat of Will Prater. A base hit on a hit-and-run, followed by a misplay in the outfield, allowed the Catamounts to take the lead.
  • The Bulldogs attempted to tie the game in the ninth inning as Lane singled to right center and stole second. Three flyball outs stranded Lane at second to end the game.

  • Shane Connolly (3-7) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, on seven hits and three strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
  • He gave up single runs in the first and second innings, and then allowed only one baserunner over the next three frames
  • Cameron Reeves tossed the final two innings, allowing just one hit.
  • Wesley Lane led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
  • Taylor Purus (4-4) gave up three runs on six hits and 13 strikeouts over 8.0 innings to pick up the win.
