CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team held its first scrimmage of the preseason Saturday afternoon as temperatures reached near 100 degrees inside Johnson Hagood Stadium.
The Bulldogs were able to get a good evaluation of where they are after the first full week of camp.
"From an operation and procedural standpoint, it was a success," said head coach
Brent Thompson. "As far as being out here at the three o'clock kick time, we handled it well. We know where we are at. We played about a half of football with our ones and twos, and about a quarter with the threes. If we can get to about three quarters next week and all four quarters the following week, we will be right on pace.
"Obviously, the defense is further ahead than the offense. When you get officials out here and you have the penalties, you start to figure out where you are at.
"Offensively, we have to eliminate those (penalties) and the fumbles on the snaps. Brandon (Rainey) didn't play a whole lot so that is going to happen. We have to get comfortable with the quarterback-center exchange and I think we will be OK there."
There was not much scoring during the scrimmage as the offense was held to one touchdown and a pair of field goals.
Jacob Godek put the first points on the board as he connected on a 49-yard field goal. He would come back later in the scrimmage and hit from 37-yards out.
The lone touchdown came when
Logan Billings slipped off left tackle and went untouched into the end zone for the six-yard touchdown. The play was set up after a long run from quarterback
Javonte Middleton.
The Bulldogs will be off on Sunday before returning to the practice field Monday morning. They will hold their second scrimmage next Saturday afternoon.
"You will see a drastic difference between this week and next week when we are back out here," said Thompson.
