HOW IT HAPPENED
- Logan Dix got things started for the Bulldogs early as she registered the game's first shot under a minute in.
- Nearly 15 minutes into the action, The Citadel already boasted a 4-2 advantage in shots.
- 18 minutes into the action, the Bulldogs suffered a blow when Dix was sent off the pitch due to a red card. The 'Dogs would play down a player the rest of the match.
- PC managed to take advantage of the uneven numbers in the 32nd minute when Dachs scored her first goal of the season.
- Despite being down a man, The Citadel continued to pressure and fight, holding a 9-4 advantage in shots through the first half.
- The second half started with Kaeley Johnston subbing into the game to man the net for the Bulldogs. Despite giving up a goal in the 52nd minute, Johnston came up with two big saves in that helped the Bulldogs to victory.
- In the 54th minute, Burgess raced down the far side of the field and collected the ball, sending a pass into the box where Yosue was waiting. Yosue becomes the fifth different first-time collegiate goal scorer this season.
- Under seven minutes later, Roth drew the 'Dogs even with the Blue Hose off the assist by Nyhart to give the 'Dogs new life.
- Roth and Yosue continued to pepper the PC goalkeeper. Roth ended the game with a game-high 11 shots, including five on frame, while Yosue took three shots, two of which were on goal. Yosue also took five corner kicks for the 'Dogs.
- The game-winning goal began in the 77th minute when Yosue drew a foul near midfield. Mikoy stepped up and delivered one of her patented perfect set pieces into the box where Nyhart was waiting with an perfectly-timed jump and header.
- The Citadel out-shot PC 12-5 in the final 45 minutes.
NOTABLES
- The 3-2 win avenged a 4-2 loss at Presbyterian last season. The 'Dogs have now won two of the last three meetings between the two programs, including a 3-2 home win back in 2017. The two teams have each scored eight goals in the last three meetings.
- Roth's 11 shots were one off the program record set by Lauren Merchant in a game vs. South Carolina State during the 2004 season. Roth is tied for second with Merchant and Kelly Pesterfield.
- Roth has now registered 21 career points, moving her up into a tie for 16th in program history.
- Yosue became the Bulldogs' fifth different first-time collegiate goal scorer Sunday, joining junior Kate Manzione and fellow freshmen Ani Ford, Hayley Long and Marie Le Gallo. The record for most first-time collegiate goal scorers is six set by the 2002 squad and matched by the 2010 and 2018 teams. The 2013 squad also boasted five different first-time collegiate goal scorers.
- With her seventh career goal scored on Sunday, Roth is now tied for 17th in program history.
- With her sixth career assist, and first this season, Mikoy moves up into a tie for eighth in program history.
- Nine different Bulldogs have scored so far this season.
- Johnston earned her first win of the season between the pipes, and the sixth of her career Sunday afternoon. With her sixth career win, Johnston moves up into a tie for fifth in program history.
QUOTABLES FROM COACH TRAQUAIR
"It was a very exciting game," said head coach
Ciaran Traquair. "We only had 10 players for the final 70 minutes and were 2-0 down part of the way through the second half, but we did really well to get the equalizer and then worked hard to get the winning goal, and we defended tremendously for the last 15 minutes of the game. It was tough. This result really just showed the character of this team."
NEXT UP
The Citadel has two final non-conference games at home next week. The 'Dogs will first welcome Columbia International to Charleston on Thursday, Sept. 19 for a 4 p.m. kickoff before Jacksonville comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 22 for a 1 p.m. opening kick.
