Contreras Scores Twice to Lead ‘Dogs to Victory Over Rams

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Behind two goals by Maria Contreras, The Citadel women's soccer team notched a 7-0 win off 39 shots over Columbia International at Washington Light Infantry Field Thursday afternoon.

12' Marie Le Gallo took a pass from Contreras and sent a long cross into the box and the ball curved into the net.
21' – Contreras scored her first goal of the season after Suzuka Yosue passed to Ellie Burgess who found Contreras in the box.
34' – Paige Davis scored her first career goal when Yosue took a corner kick that was deflected off the boot of Devyn Nyhart and sent across the box to Davis' waiting foot.
36' – Brooke Cheatham scored her first career goal off an assist from Ani Ford with a chip from a few yards out.
51' – Contreras scored her second goal of the game with a set piece from just outside the penalty box.

  • Sophomore Maddie Somogyi played all 90 minutes in between the pipes, earning her second career solo shutout and second career win. She now boasts a goals against average of 1.27 on the year.

NOTABLES
  • The Bulldogs' seven goals scored are tied for fifth most in program history. The school record is 14 set against Alabama State in a game during the 2009 campaign.
  • The 39 shots taken are tied for fourth in program history. The 'Dogs set the program record with 44 earlier this season against Bob Jones.
  • The eight assists are tied for second in program history. The program record is 16 set in the 2009 game against Alabama State.
  • With Davis and Cheatham both scoring in the game, the Bulldogs have now had seven first-time collegiate goal scorers this season, setting a new program record. The previous mark was six set by the 2002 team and matched by the 2010 and 2018 squads.
  • Contreras became the 23rd Bulldog in program history to notch a multi-goal outing with her two goals.
  • Contreras now boasts six career assists, moving her up into a tie for ninth in program history with fellow teammates Logan Dix and Mel Mikoy, as well as three former Bulldogs.
  • The Bulldogs have now had 13 different players score at least one goal. Last season, 11 Bulldogs got in on the scoring action.

NEXT UP
The Bulldogs will close out the non-conference portion of the season on Sunday, Sept. 22 with a 1 p.m. game against Jacksonville. The first 150 fans to the WLI Field will receive complimentary ice cream sandwiches.
