CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel (8-5-4, 3-4-2 SoCon) battled Samford (9-2-5, 6-0-2 SoCon) through 90 minutes before falling 1-0 Friday afternoon at Washington Light Infantry Field.

Samford scored the match's lone goal at 6:12 when Brinley Murphy finished off an assist from Mamie Carman, before The Citadel held the visitors off the board for the remainder of the contest.

Samford finished with a 21-7 advantage in shots and placed seven attempts on goal compared to four for The Citadel. The visitors also held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Zoe Santos made six saves across 90 minutes, recording three stops in each half to keep The Citadel within one throughout the match.

Jasiah Pack led The Citadel with two shots, including one on goal. Emily Steiner, Alixandria Fletcher and Gabrielle Macer also placed attempts on frame.

"The girls did well to stay in the match and make a real go of it at the end," head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "You have to defend well against Samford, and I thought we stood up to that challenge. I was disappointed with the goal we conceded, but we had some good spells with the ball. We just lacked that little bit of quality to really hurt them. There were some excellent performances today that will continue to carry us into the business end of the season."

Following Samford's early goal, Pack registered The Citadel's first shot of the match less than a minute later.
Santos made her first save at 16:20 before Samantha Grantham followed with an attempt on the other end less than a minute later.
