JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The Citadel (8-6-4, 3-5-2 SoCon) fell to ETSU (9-6-2, 6-3-1 SoCon) via a 3-0 margin on Sunday afternoon. For the match, an aggressive Buccaneers approach kept the Bulldogs' offense in check, limiting The Citadel to two shots with none coming on goal while facing 22 ETSU shots, eight on frame.
"Disappointed with the result, we really struggled with our on the ball performance and had far too many turnovers," head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "At 1-0 in second half we had some good momentum, but the second goal is really poor on our part and kills the game. I am really proud of the collective effort this season and we will need to be better next week in playoffs."
First Half
- ETSU opened the scoring at 2:13 when Caroline Wawak scored unassisted.
- The Bulldogs earned corner kicks at 5:18 and 37:46.
- Zoe Santos made consecutive saves at 36:39 and 36:48 during an ETSU stretch that included five attacking actions from 30:14 to 41:50.
Second Half
- Santos made saves on Alex Beck shots at 46:38 and 53:17 before Emily Steiner recorded the Bulldogs' first shot of the half at 55:06.
- ETSU pressured from 64:36 to 74:22 with two corner kicks and two shots, but Santos stopped Natalie Capannelli's attempt to maintain the one-goal deficit.
- Alixandria Fletcher put a shot high in the 77th minute, but Capannelli scored from Reagan Fitzgerald's assist at 79:31 to give ETSU a 2-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs earned a late corner kick at 85:21 before the Buccaneers' Bailey Coston notched another insurance goal at 86:39.
In total, Santos played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with five saves.
With the regular season concluded, the Bulldogs advance in the Southern Conference Championship starting on Friday, Nov. 6. Following a lost tiebreaker with Mercer, The Citadel falls to the No. 8 overall seed for the upcoming opening round, squaring off against ninth-seeded Western Carolina on site at No. 1 Samford in Birmingham, Ala., kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
With a victory over the Catamounts, The Citadel will challenge the top-seeded Bulldogs in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
