Mixed Rifle Falls at VMI

RESULTS

LEXINGTON, Va. – For the first time since the 2016-17 season, The Citadel mixed rifle team dropped an away match at rival VMI to open the season Saturday morning.

The VMI coed team posted an aggregate score of 4528 to take first of the three complete teams that competed, while the Bulldogs' mixed team was 23 points behind with a 4505. The VMI women's team finished third with an aggregate score of 4366. The Citadel women's team was represented by just two shooters competing individually.

VMI's Hunter Jacob led all shooters with a first-place 1149, while senior Alexander McAlear finished second overall with an 1136. Junior Max Brabston finished third with a combined score of 1133, while freshman Cameron Bates and sophomore Emily Perkins finished fifth and sixth with an 1119 and an 1117, respectively.

THREE-POSITION SMALLBORE
  • VMI finished first in three-position smallbore with a combined score of 2242, led by Jacob and Kelia Aardema. Jacob posted a 571, while Aardema posted a 567.
  • The Citadel mixed team finished second in the discipline with a 2217, while the VMI women's team finished with a 2140.
  • Senior McAlear and junior Brabston finished third and fourth to lead the Bulldogs. McAlear posted a score of 561, while Brabston finished with a 559.
  • Sophomore Perkins posted a sixth-best score of 552, setting a new personal record.
  • Freshman Bates finished 11th with a 545 in his first collegiate competition.
  • Sophomore Jack Wittman finished 20th with a 502.
  • Senior Tierra Price was the only member of the women's team to shoot in smallbore, firing a 520.

AIR RIFLE
  • The Bulldogs' mixed team took first in air rifle with a combined 2288 compared to a 2286 by VMI. The VMI women finished with a 2226 in air.
  • Jacob was the top finisher in air rifle with a 578, while Alexander Allison finished second with a 576.
  • The Bulldogs took the next three positions, led by McAlear's 575, Brabston's 574 and Bates' 574.
  • Perkins finished 10th with a 565 and Brandon Oerman posted a 563, marking a personal best for the junior.
  • Price finished 16th in air rifle with a 539 and newcomer Victoria Krone posted a 515 in her first collegiate rifle competition.
COMING UP
The Bulldogs will be off from outside competition for the next two weeks. The 'Dogs will open a six-match homestand on Saturday, Oct. 5 with a match against Wofford.
