Match Preview: Tennis Faces Georgia Southern, Clemson on Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team travels to the upstate this weekend for a pair of matches on Sunday, Jan. 26. The Bulldog netminders will take on Georgia Southern in a neutral-site match at 9 a.m. before tangling with Clemson at 6 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Junior Gavin Stewart and freshman Zvonko Bencedic recorded their first doubles victory of the season on Jan. 20, winning 6-3 at No. 1 singles over No. 18 Tennessee's Andrew Rogers and Pat Harper, but it was the nationally-ranked Volunteers who were ultimately victorious as they took the match 7-0 over the Bulldogs. In singles action, Stewart took seven games from Scott Jones at No. 1, including forcing the second set to a 7-5 decision, while Noah Nawabi and Bencedic each claimed four games over their opponents at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Georgia Southern is 1-3 heading into this weekend, having played Georgia Tech in a doubleheader in Atlanta, at Florida Gulf Coast and at Miami. The Eagles claimed their first victory of the season on Jan. 17, defeating FGCU 4-3. Georgia Southern's roster features seniors Diego Finkelstein, Murphy McCullough and Santiago Suarez, as well as juniors Carlos Garcia, Jonathan Morales and Pascal Wagemaker to compliment five freshmen. McCullough is the leading returner from the 2019 squad, having secured 12 singles victories last season, but Finkelstein and Wagemaker were close behind with 11 each.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Clemson heads into the weekend 2-0 (with a match against Auburn still to be played this afternoon, will update before releasing tomorrow). The Tigers defeated Furman 5-2 in the season opener on Jan. 18 and then turned around to hand Wofford a 4-1 loss later that day. Clemson features an experienced roster that includes seniors Gabriel Diaz Freire, Pierre-Louis Dodens and Carlos Kelaidis, as well as juniors Yizhou Liu and Jaxon Wiley. The Tigers' roster also includes five sophomores and just one freshman.
