Basketball Shows Plenty of Fight at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Freshman Fletcher Abee continued his climb up The Citadel basketball record book Wednesday night, scoring a team-high 16 points as the Bulldogs dropped a tough game, 91-67 at ETSU.

KEY STATS
  • Freshman Stephen Clark opened the game for the Bulldogs by hitting an open 3-pointer, the second of his career, but ETSU managed to control the early going by going up by eight, 14-6 through the first 4:30.
  • ETSU flirted with a double-digit lead early, but Kaiden Rice pulled the 'Dogs to within four, 22-18 with a 3-pointer nearly 10 minutes in, and close to two minutes later, Abee made it a one-point, 26-25 game with a four-point play as he drilled one of his team-high three made 3-pointers and was fouled on the attempt.
  • ETSU was able to stretch the lead back out to eight, 38-30 with 1:46 left in the opening period, but Kaelon Harris drove the paint for a bucket, setting the score at 38-32 with a minute left to play. Neither team was able to score in the closing seconds of the half despite both sides converting over 55% from the field for the period.
  • After Abee opened the second half with a jumper in the paint, ETSU went on a 13-3 run to claim its first double-digit lead of the game three minutes into the second half.
  • The short-handed Bulldogs managed to cut back into the deficit for a short spell, including a made 3-pointer from Harris that set the score at 53-44, but ETSU went on a 6-0 spurt to stretch the lead back out, and with 8:07 remaining in regulation, the Bucs went up by 21, 74-53 when Isaiah Tisdale made a layup.
  • The Bulldogs ended the game shooting 49.0% (24-of-49) from the field after starting off by connecting on 57.1% (12-of-21) of their attempts in the first half.
  • ETSU shot 55.0% (33-of-60) from the field for the game, including 42.9% (9-of-21) from beyond the 3-point arc.
  • Abee led the Bulldogs with 16 points off 5-for-9 shooting (.556), including converting three of his six 3-point attempts.
  • Harris came on strong late to score 14 points , shooting 50% (6-of-12) from the field, while Tyson Batiste scored 10 points, including going a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
  • All five members of the Buccaneers' starting five finished in double figures highlighted by Daivien Williamson's game-high 19 points off 7-of-10 shooting.

NOTES
  • ETSU entered the game ranked No. 3 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.
  • Abee jumped four spots to sit ninth in program history for points scored by a freshman. Abee currently boasts 287 points, 24 away from eighth.
  • Abee finished Wednesday night's game with three made 3-pointers, giving him 63 on the year. He is just two made treys away from cracking the top five in program history for 3-pointers made by a freshman.
  • Wednesday night's three triple performance by Abee marks the 12th time this season the Morganton, North Carolina native has converted at least three 3-pointers in a game. Abee has made multiple 3-pointers in 20 games, including six straight.
  • Clark swatted away two shots Wednesday night, marking the fourth multi-block game of the season for the Matthews, North Carolina native. Clark boasts 10 blocked shots on the year.
  • With two assists at ETSU, Batiste moved up to tied 10th in program history for single-season assists. Batiste has 131 assists on the year.

COMING UP
The Bulldogs will next play two games at home beginning Saturday, Feb. 15 with a 1 p.m. game against Samford. The game will be the second of the season for the Bulldogs on the SoCon's Nexstar Package and will be carried by six local television markets in Charleston (WCBD), Roanoke, Virginia (WWCW), Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville (WYCW), Johnson City, Tennessee (WJHL), Greensboro/High Point (WGHP) and Macon (WMUB).

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
Saturday's game against Samford will be Scout Day with area boy scouts able to come to campus early to earn merit badges before taking in the Battle of the Bulldogs at 1 p.m. The game will also feature the first-ever Battalion Baby Race at halftime.

CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags). The bags may have a logo on one side that is no larger than 4.5 inches by 3.4 inches. Bags carrying a properly sized logo of other teams or venues are permitted.
