Bulldogs Ready to Open Season Against Coppin State

GAME NOTES | TICKETS

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel opens the 2020 season Feb. 14-16 with a three-game series against Coppin State. The series opener is set for 4 p.m., with Saturday's game set for 3 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 1 p.m.

Ticket Information
Tickets for all home games are available on CitadelSports.com/tickets or by calling the box office at 843-953-DOGS. Tickets will also be available at the stadium box office starting one hour before first pitch.


Weekend Weather
Temperatures are expected to be in the 50s for the first two games of the series, with temperatures reaching the low 60s with a slight chance of rain on Sunday.


SoCon Digital Network
All three games of the weekend series will be broadcast on the SoCon Digital Network.


Series History With Coppin State
The Bulldogs and Eagles have met one time prior on the diamond. The two teams met during the 2005 season with the Bulldogs winning 15-0


Season Openers
The Citadel is 27-28 in season openers dating back to 1965.


Opening at The Joe
The Bulldogs are opening the season at The Joe for the 14th-straight year. The Citadel is 7-6 in the previous 13 season openers.


MEAC Opener
The Citadel will open the season against a team from the MEAC for the second-straight season. In 2019, the Bulldogs opened against Delaware State, taking the final two games of the series.


Connolly Gets Call on Opening Day
Junior left hander Shane Connolly will get the ball in the season opener. He began the 2019 season by throwing a complete-game shutout in his first outing against Delaware State.


Pair of Sophomores Join Rotation
The Bulldogs weekend rotation will feature a pair of sophomore right handers in Cameron Reeves and Lathan Todd.


Home Sweet Home
The 2020 season starts with the Bulldogs playing 21 of their first 25 games at the friendly confines of Riley Park.


Crossing State Lines
The Bulldogs will not cross the South Carolina state line until the final weekend of March. The Citadel's trip to Mercer on March 27-29  will be the first contest outside of the Palmetto State. The Bulldogs play their first 25 games inside the state, and will play 43 of the 54 regular season games in South Carolina.


Young Team
For the second-straight season, The Citadel will be one of the youngest teams in college baseball. The infield will consist of all freshman and sophomores, while potentially have six freshman or sophomores in the starting lineup.


B1G Opponent
For the second-straight year, the Bulldogs will face a team from the Big 10. The Citadel will travel to face Ohio State on April 24-26. Last season, the Bulldogs welcomed Michigan to Riley Park.


Two-Sport Athletes
The Bulldogs roster features a pair of two-sport athletes in Lane Botkin and Ryan McCarthy. Both players are also members of the football team.


Starling Among Nation's Top Freshmen
Right-handed pitcher Gant Starling enters the season at No. 74 on the D1Baseball Top 150 freshmen to watch this season list.


D1 Baseball Pro Prospects
Outfielder Ryan McCarthy was named the No. 2 draft prospect in the SoCon in 2020 by D1Baseball. Left hander Shane Connolly is ranked 11th and Jeffery Brown 17th. Tyler Corbitt (4th), Cameron Reeves (7th) and Lane Botkin (9th) are all ranked in the Top 10 in the SoCon for the 2021 draft.


Starling Receives Preseason Honor
Freshman closer Gant Starling was named the Southern Conference Preseason Freshman of the Year by D1Baseball. Additionally, Travis Lott was ranked as the No. 8 freshman in the conference and Noah Mitchell was ranked ninth.


On Deck
The Bulldogs hit the road for the first time in 2020 when they travel to face Clemson on Feb. 18. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
