CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 22
nd-ranked Citadel mixed and the 29
th-ranked women's rifle teams will host an NCAA qualifying match this weekend at the Inouye Marksmanship Center, Saturday, Feb. 22 – Sunday, Feb. 23.
No. 12 NC State and No. 20 UAB will compete on Saturday with one relay beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Both Bulldog squads, 24
th-ranked Georgia Southern and No. 25 Wofford will compete in two relays on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. The Citadel's mixed team and Wofford will compete in the first relay with the Bulldog women and Georgia Southern competing in the second. The three Eagles making the trip for the competition will be competing as individuals.
LAST TIME OUT
The 22
nd-ranked Citadel mixed rifle team and the 28
th-ranked women's team closed out the road portion of the 2019-20 regular season on Feb. 8. The mixed rifle team defeated the 25
th-ranked Terriers of Wofford with an aggregate score of 4512. The Terriers ended their day with an aggregate score of 4475, while the Bulldog women finished up with a season-best 4228, surpassing their previous season best by 28 points.
Wofford's
Daniel Wesson claimed top honors in aggregate (1145), as well as both guns with a 570 in smallbore and a 575 in air rifle.
The Citadel swept the next three aggregate spots, including freshman
Cameron Bates in second (1141), junior
Max Brabston third (1139) and senior
Alexander McAlear in fourth (1127). For The Citadel women, sophomore
Megan Waters led the way with a ninth-place effort in aggregate (1091), which was also the highest aggregate score of the season for the women's squad, while senior
Tierra Price ended her day with a 10
th-place 1054.
SCOUTING NC STATE
Saturday will mark the second time this season the Wolfpack will have visited Charleston. NC State and Navy went up against the Bulldogs on Oct. 26. NC State is 4-7 on the year and is four spots outside of the cut line to make it to the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championships. The Wolfpack last competed at home against No. 7 Nebraska on Feb. 2 with the Huskers taking the match 4685-4663.
Emily Fisher has paced the Pack this season with four of the top five aggregates scores, including a season-best 1175 and a pair of 1174's.
Makenzie Sheffield boasts the Pack's fifth-best aggregate score on the year, an 1172, with
Aliya Butt and
Addy Burrow close behind.
SCOUTING UAB
Saturday will mark the second time this season the Blazers of UAB will have traveled to Charleston. The Blazers took top honors on Oct. 12 over The Citadel's two teams and Georgia Southern. UAB last competed on Feb. 1 in a head-to-head matchup at Wofford. The Blazers took the match 4575-4451 to finish 7-0 in Southern Conference action. Three Blazers sit atop the aggregate scoring for the Blazers paced by
Amy Kohan's 1156 and a pair of 1155's from
Sophia Flores and
Zoe Lum. Flores owns three of the Blazers' top five best aggregate scores as she also posted an 1150 and an 1149.
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Georgia Southern will be making its second trip to Charleston this season. The trio of Eagles that will compete as individuals in the match are
Ashley Judson,
Gabby Morrow and
Amelia Pierce. Judson boasts the Eagles' 10 best aggregate scores this season, including a season-best 1157 and an 1155. Morrow posted a season-best aggregate score of 1118 on Feb. 8, while Pierce's season-best aggregate score of 1103 came back on Feb. 8.
SCOUTING WOFFORD
Sunday will mark the third time this season the Terriers and Bulldogs will have competed against each other. The Citadel defeated Wofford 4544-4445 in Charleston on Oct. 5 and most recently bested the Terriers 4512-4475 in Spartanburg on Feb. 8. The Terriers have been led by
Daniel Wesson, who boasts the team's top six aggregate scores, including a season-best 1145 on Feb. 8 followed by a pair of 1139's. Behind Wesson are
Scott Condo,
Andrew Visconti and
Marcus Stallings.
COMING UP
The Bulldogs will close out the 2019-20 campaign Saturday, March 7 – Sunday, March 8 at the 2020 Southern Conference Rifle Championships hosted by Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia.
