Weekend Preview: Bulldogs Competing in SoCon Indoor Championships This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel track and field teams will travel to Lexington, Virginia this weekend to compete in the 2020 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at VMI's Corps Physical Training Facility, Saturday Feb. 29 – Sunday, March 1.
Saturday's schedule will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's heptathlon, while the women's pentathlon gets under way at 9:15 a.m. Saturday's final event, the women's distance medley relay, begins at 6:35 p.m. to cap the first day of competition.
Sunday's schedule gets going at 9 a.m. with the continuation of the heptathlon. The final event of the day, the men's 4x400-meter relay, is slated for 4 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony.

BLUMER PICKS UP PAIR OF WEEKLY SOCON AWARDS
Junior pole vaulter Sam Blumer picked up a pair of weekly awards from the Southern Conference on Feb. 26. A native of Greenville, South Carolina, Blumer was named the General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week and was also tabbed the SoCon's Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. Blumer earned the field athlete of the week honor for the second time in three weeks. He was first named SoCon Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 12.
RECORD SETTING
Feb. 22 marked the fifth week in a row that at least one program record was set for The Citadel track and field programs as three program records were set to go along with 21 personal records at the USC Indoor Open.

The team will be off for a week following the SoCon meet before traveling to Conway, South Carolina to take part in the Spring Break Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina, Friday, March 13 – Saturday, March 14.

- Freshman Heidi Fortin set the program freshman record in the mile with a persona-record time of 5:20.66. The mark is also the fourth-fastest time in program history overall.
- Blumer won the men's pole vault with a program and school record of 16' 4.75" (5.00 meters). Blumer broke the previous mark he set on Feb. 8.
- Freshman Sam Sharnas set his fifth program record of the indoor season, this one coming in the freshman record in the 3,000-meter race with a personal record of 8:47.06. The time placed him fourth on the day and is seventh overall in program history.
LAST WEEK'S NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Sophomore Mya Dollard finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5' 0.5".Â
- Senior Prince Howard-Whitaker threw a PR in the weight throw of 51' 6.5" to finish third overall on the day. The mark is eighth in school history. He also threw a PR of 46' 2.5" in the shot put to take fourth.
- Freshman Sam LaRosa finished seventh in the pole vault with a PR height of 13' 7.25".
- Senior Cardan Williams recorded a personal record time of 22.24 in the 200-meter dash
- Junior Timiebi Ogobri raced to a PR time of 22.94 in the 200m.
- Freshman Kane Duncan recorded a PR of 50.79 in the 400-meter dash.
- Junior Jeremy Shipley posted a PR of 50.91 in the 400m.Â
