Weekend Preview: Tennis Hits the Road for Three Matches

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel tennis team will travel to the states of Alabama and Georgia this weekend with the goal of playing three matches.

The Bulldogs' weekend will begin on Friday, Feb. 7 with an 11 a.m. Eastern, neutral-site match against Point at the Sportsplex in Valley, Alabama. The 'Dogs will then play Auburn at 6 p.m. Eastern on the Tigers' home courts.

The Citadel will look to close out the weekend by playing a 4 p.m. match at Georgia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 9.

LAST TIME OUT
After having their matches rained out on Feb. 1, The Citadel men's tennis program was able to salvage the weekend with a pair of victories in the USC Sumter Invitational on Feb. 2. The Bulldogs began the day with a 7-0 victory over Benedict at 10 a.m. and followed that up with an 8-1 win over tournament host USC Sumter to close out the weekend.

730 CAREER WINS FOR KRIESE
The win over Benedict was No. 730 for head coach Chuck Kriese. Kriese has secured 45 wins in his tenure at The Citadel.

SCOUTING POINT
Point heads into this weekend with a 1-1 record after securing the season's first win, 6-1 over Tuskegee on Feb. 3. Last season, Point finished with a record of 16-7, including going a perfect 7-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. The Skyhawks' season came to an end in the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. Point's 2020 roster includes four seniors and a pair of juniors. The senior class is made up of Matthew Bagley, Federico Barbon, Joe Klokow and Patrick Tobacco, while the junior class includes Julien Pereira and Daniel Sheldon. The upperclassmen are aided by a sophomore and five freshmen.

SCOUTING AUBURN
Auburn is currently 6-1 on the year, including 4-0 at home. The Tigers most recently defeated Nebraska 6-1 on the road and will play Florida State at 12 p.m. Central on Friday before taking on the Bulldogs. Last season, Auburn went 12-19 with an 11-7 record at home. Auburn's roster is made up of a pair of seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and three freshmen. The seniors include Tim Dollman and Michael Durham, while Diego Chavarria, Matteo Devincentis, Tad Maclean and Tom Wright comprise the junior class. Dollman and Maclean are top returners from last season as both secure 10 singles wins.

SCOUTING GEORGIA TECH
Georgia Tech is currently 3-2 on the year, including 2-1 at home. The Yellow Jackets opened the season by sweeping a doubleheader against Georgia Southern and followed those wins up with a neutral-site victory over Oregon. The Jackets have since dropped a pair of matches at No. 9 Texas A&M and at home against 18th-ranked Georgia. Georgia Tech will play in-town rival Georgia State on Friday, Feb. 7 before tangling with Auburn on Sunday morning. The Yellow Jackets are led by a pair of seniors, a junior and three sophomores. Seniors Carlos Divar and Chris Yun are joined by junior Brandon Freestone, sophomores Zummy Bauer, Cole Gromley and Pablo Schelcher, and four freshmen. Schelcher is the leading returner from last season as he was second on the 2018-19 squad with 11 singles wins.

UP NEXT
The Bulldogs are scheduled to be off for close to two weeks and are slated to next compete by opening the Southern Conference schedule with a pair of road matches on Friday, Feb. 21 and Sunday, Feb. 23. The 'Dogs will first travel to Chattanooga on Feb. 21 for a 2:30 p.m. match with the Mocs. The Bulldogs will then return to South Carolina, playing Furman on Feb. 23 in a 3 p.m. match.
