CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel baseball team will hold its first official practice of the 2021 season Friday afternoon. The start of practice means we are just 21 days away from the start of the season.
"The first official day of practice is always a great day," said head coach
Tony Skole. "It seems like an eternity since the same day a year ago. I don't know if I have ever been so excited to begin a season. Our players have been working extremely hard and they are eager for this spring.
"I really like our team. We still have a ways to go, but we have improved drastically in all area. Within our program, there are high expectations and I really like the direction we are heading."
The Bulldogs were off to a great start before the 2020 season was cancelled. The Citadel was 10-6 with weekend sweeps over Coppin State and Saint Peter's. The Bulldogs also picked up a pair of victories against Yale and a midweek victory at Charleston Southern.
The lineup will look very similar to last season as the Bulldogs return nearly their entire roster. Shortstop
Tilo Skole was hitting a team-best .377, while center fielder
Jeffery Brown was hitting .350 with three triples and 21 runs scored. Second baseman
Tyler Corbitt and
Noah Mitchell were each tied for the team lead with two home runs.
On the mound, the Bulldog pitching staff owned a 3.80 ERA. They allowed just 118 hits and struck out 152 over 142.0 innings.
Cameron Reeves was 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA. He struck out 32 over 26.0 innings, and did not allow an earned run over his final 25.2 innings.
The Bulldogs will open the season Feb. 19-21 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The Southern Conference portion of the schedule has been released, with the non-conference schedule being announced in the near future.
