Dix Lifts The Citadel Past Jacksonville, 1-0

CHARLESTON, S.C.Logan Dix continued her torrid run of play by firing her third match-winner of the season on a rainy Friday afternoon at Wilson Field to give The Citadel a 1-0 shutout victory over Jacksonville.

Game Information
Final Score: The Citadel 1, Jacksonville 0
Record: The Citadel (6-2-2), Jacksonville (0-5)
Location: Charleston, S.C. (Wilson Field) (NOTE: Friday's match was moved from WLI Field to Wilson Field due to wet field conditions.)
Series: Series tied 2-2-1

How It Happened
  • Both sides drew corner kicks in the first five minutes but were unable to create a dangerous opportunity on either side, but The Citadel kept up the pressure as the match wore on, getting three shots in the first 15 minutes, including one from Logan Dix that forced Jacksonville's Courtney Green into action for an early save.
  • McKenna Falarski tested the keeper from distance in the 21st minute, getting some heat behind a strike from 25 yards out and again forcing Green to make the save.
  • Dix provided the breakthrough for the Bulldogs at the 30:44 mark, capitalizing on a ball that ricocheted inside the box after a corner kick. Hannah Roth played the ball down to the foot of Dix, who hammered the shot home to give The Citadel a 1-0 lead late in the opening half that it would carry through the break.
  • Jacksonville had its best chance at an equalizer in the 60th minute as Alexys Nowak found space in the box and fired on goal, but Jess Newton made the stop to preserve the shutout.
  • In the closing minutes, Jacksonville made a flurry of substitutions, bringing on four offensive-minded players in search of an equalizer with six minutes remaining, but the stout defense of The Citadel held the Dolphins without a shot down the stretch to extend their unbeaten streak to six matches.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Citadel set a new program record with its six-match unbeaten streak and has not dropped a match since Sept. 27 against then-No. 12 Pittsburgh.
  • Head Coach Ciaran Traquair now owns three of the top five winningest seasons in program history as the Bulldogs hit six wins on Friday afternoon. Traquair has also produced a nine-win campaign (2018) and another six-win season (2019).
  • Logan Dix's goal was her ninth of the season, moving her into sole possession of sixth place on the program's single-season charts. Dix's 24 career goals rank fourth in The Citadel's history, as do her 56 career points (24 goals, eight assists).
  • Dix's match-winner also gave her six for her career, moving her into second place in that category and trailing only Hall of Famer Mariana Garcia's 14 match-winners.
  • Hannah Roth notched her first assist of the season and now has 10 for her career, becoming just the fifth Bulldog ever to have double-digit assists. Teammate Suzuka Yosue also ranks in the top five of that category with 12 career helpers.
  • Jess Newton, only a freshman, logged her third solo shutout of the season and is already just one short of The Citadel's all-time career record of four, established by Whitney Nave.
  • Newton's goals against average for the season dipped to 0.89, well under the previous program record of 1.34 set by Nave in 2009.

Up Next
The Citadel will wrap up its non-conference slate on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. as the Bulldogs bring another Florida foe to town for a battle with North Florida. That meeting with the Ospreys will be the fifth in program history with North Florida holding a 3-1 edge; in the last match between the two sides, however, The Citadel came away with a 3-2 victory in Charleston on Aug. 19, 2018.
