Hammer Throw Record Falls at Weems Baskin Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Citadel put together 14 top-10 performances on the opening day of the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by South Carolina, a number that included Milan Williams breaking the school record in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 178-2 (54.31m).

Twelve of the 14 top-10 performances were accomplished by individuals, with two more relay squads earning top-10 spots as well. Eight of the top-10 individual performers came on the men's side, with the women adding four more on the day.
 
Men's Results
  • Evan McDonald claimed the individual championship in the javelin throw with a toss of 160-11 (49.06m), and Caleb McDonald followed just behind in fourth place with a mark of 143-9 (43.82m). Wes Evans rounded out the Bulldogs in the event with a heave of 137-9 (42.00m) to take sixth place.
  • Prince Howard-Whitaker earned a podium finish in the open hammer throw after a toss of 156-7 (47.73m) to place third in the event.
  • In the hammer throw invite, JP Caglione placed sixth with a mark of 181-1 (55.21m).
  • Sam Sharnas starred for The Citadel in the 5,000m run, crossing the line in 15:11.81 to place fourth.
  • The Bulldogs got a pair of top-10 performances in the pole vault as Sam LaRosa placed fourth and Lindsay Pierce was sixth, both with identical leaps of 14-1.25 (4.30m). LaRosa cleared the height on his first attempt, while Pierce reached it on his third try.
  • The squad of Timiebi Ogobri, Kane Duncan, Treonte Newton and Jeremy Shipley brought home a fifth-place finish in the 4x300m relay, finishing in 2:23.57.
 
Women's Results
  • Milan Williams' school-record throw of 178-2 (54.31m) came in the hammer throw invite and earned her a fourth-place finish in the event.
  • In the javelin throw, The Citadel got a pair of top-10 performances from Shannon Ziccarello, who took fourth with a mark of 112-6 (34.29m), and Anna Barfield, whose throw of 104-3 (31.79m) was good for sixth place.
  • Samantha Engel reached a height of 10-8 (3.25m) on her first attempt to take sixth place in the pole vault.
  • In the 4x800m relay, The Citadel earned a fourth-place finish in 11:02.72 with the quartet of Casey Miller, Heidi Fortin, Amber Opp and Kenslee Padgett.
 
Up Next
The Citadel will close out competition at the Weems Baskin Invitational on Saturday, with the action slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's shot put and women's discus, triple jump and high jump competitions.
