Track Set for 2021 SoCon Outdoor Championships
4/30/2021 12:36:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel is set to compete in the Southern Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday and Sunday hosted at Western Carolina's Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C. This year marks the 96th championship for the men and 34th for the women and will be the first since 2019 after the 2020 championships were not contested due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Â
Saturday's schedule gets under way with the women's 10,000m run at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's 10,000m. The decathlon and field events begin at 10 a.m., with the heptathlon starting at 10:15 a.m. A full day of events concludes with the men's 3,000m steeplechase and men's pole vault at 5:55 p.m. In all, 12 champions will be crowned on the first day of competition, four on the track and eight in field events.
Â
Sunday's schedule opens with the first of the final five decathlon events at 9 a.m., with the heptathlon resuming at 9:15 a.m. Field events begin with the women's discus and men's shot put finals at 11:15 a.m. and the women's 4x100m relay gets the track events started at 1 p.m. The day concludes with the women's and men's 4x400m relays at 4:25 p.m. and 4:40 p.m., respectively, followed by the awards ceremony. Thirty events will crown champions on the final day of the meet.
Action on both days will be carried live on ESPN+ with live results available through Hy-Tek Results.
In their last time out, the Bulldogs set a pair of school records and racked up 14 top-10 finishes at the USC Open two weeks ago. JP Caglione broke the program record in the hammer throw with a toss of 187-10 (57.25m) to earn a sixth-place finish in the event, and Mecca Jackson broke the tape in 12.11 to finish sixth in the 100m dash.
This outdoor season, The Citadel has earned a trio of Field Athlete of the Week honors as Caglione, Milan Williams and Sam Blumer have each captured the honors once. After eight cadet-athletes (four individuals and one relay team) brought home all-conference honors at the conference indoor meet in February, The Citadel will be seeking to add to that total this weekend.
