CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team held their first practice in pads Saturday morning at Wilson Field.
"The number one thing I saw out here today was it actually looked like we were playing football," said head coach
Brent Thompson. "When you are out here in helmets, you are just trying to get your foot patterns down and learn your assignments. When the pads go on, that is when you have to fit the right gaps, run the football and take care of the football when you start to get hit a little bit.
"The energy and enthusiasm was good. It just can't be that way for the thudded periods we did today, we have to have that all throughout practice."
The Bulldogs took advantage of the cooler temperatures through the first four days of practice, but are looking forward to getting a little heat acclimation in the next week or two.
The team will be off on Sunday before moving their operation inside Johnson Hagood Stadium for the remainder of camp. All practices and scrimmages will be closed to the public.
"Tomorrow is our off day and we are just going to use a couple hours to go over some film," said Thompson. "We have just about everything installed on offense and defense so what we want to do is have everything we have in, soak in, so that way we can move forward on Monday."
