Slow Start the Difference on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football team could not overcome a slow start in dropping its home opener, 38-21, to Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon inside Johnson Hagood Stadium.

How it Happened
  • CSU got on the board on their opening drive as Garris Schwarting caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jack Chambers.
  • The Bucs doubled the lead on their next possession Schwarting threw a six-yard touchdown pass on a reverse to Kyris Barnett.
  • Schwarting caught his second touchdown late in the first quarter, this time from 27-yards out.
  • The Citadel got on the board midway through the second quarter as Jaylan Adams capped a 13-play drive with a one-yard run on fourth down.
  • After a Buc field goal, Keyonte Sessions scored on an eight yard run with 41 seconds left in the half.
  • CSU opened the scoring in the second half with a 69 yard catch and run.
  • The Bulldogs found the end zone again late in the third quarter as Cooper Wallace got to the outside and scored from 16 yards out.
  • The Bucs closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with Schwarting's four receiving touchdown of the game.

  • The Citadel's first touchdown of the game came on a 13-play drive. Both of the Bulldogs scoring drives last week were 13-play drives.
  • The eight-yard touchdown run from Keyonte Sessions in the second quarter was his first career rushing touchdown.
  • Sessions led the ground attack with 65 yards on just four carries. He also had two receptions for 27 yards.
  • Jaylan Adams threw for a career-high 167 yards. He also rushed for 39 yards and a touchdown.
  • Cooper Wallace scored his first touchdown of the season in the third quarter.
  • Raleigh Webb caught a team-high six passes for 80 yards.
  • Ryan McCarthy added five grabs for 60 yards.
  • Matt Campbell averaged 50.8 yards on five punts, including a long of 58 yards.
  • Anthony Britton Jr. and Marquise Blount each had a team-high nine tackles. Blount added 2.5 sacks.
  • Willie Eubanks III finished with eight tackles. He became the 20th player in program history to reach 300 career tackles.
