Baseball Opens Season Against FDU

GAME NOTES

CHARLESTON, S.C. -
The Citadel baseball team opens the 2022 season on Feb. 18-20 as Fairleigh Dickinson comes to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The series gets underway at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and concludes with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch on Sunday.

Weekend Weather
Temperatures are expected to be near 70 degrees for the series opener, and in the mid-60s for the final two games. A threat of rain exists for the opener.


ESPN+/ESPN3
This weekend's games against Fairleigh Dickinson will be streamed live on the ESPN platform. The games on Friday and Sunday will air on ESPN+, with Saturday's game airing on ESPN3.

Tickets for all home games are available on CitadelSports.com/tickets or by calling the box office at 843-953-DOGS. Tickets will also be available at the stadium box office starting one hour before first pitch.


vs. Fairleigh Dickinson
The weekend series with the Knights marks the first meeting between the two schools on the diamond.


vs. The NEC
The Citadel is 5-1 all-time against current members of the Northeast Conference. The Bulldogs swept a series from Wagner in 1988, while going 2-1 against Mount St. Mary's from 1992-97.


Season Openers
The Bulldogs are 28-29 in season openers dating back to 1965.


Opening at Home
This season marks the 16th-straight year that the Bulldogs will open the season inside Riley Park. The Citadel is 8-7 in the previous 15 openers.


Early Start Time on Sunday
Sunday's series finale against Fairleigh Dickinson will be begin at 11:30 a.m. to accommodate travel plans for the Knights.


Baseball in the Lowcountry
The Bulldogs will play their first 24 games of the season in the Lowcountry. Of those games, 23 will be played at Riley Park with the lone road game being played at Charleston Southern.


Staying Home
The Citadel will play all 17 of its games during the month of March inside Riley Park. The Bulldogs are the only Division I team that will play every game during the month of March on their home field.


Reeves Earns Opening-Day Start
Senior Cameron Reeves will get the start on the mound in the season opener. Last season, Reeves struck out 85 in 82.0 innings. He held opponents to a .244 batting average against.


Paulsen Makes Debut Saturday
Freshman left hander Fisher Paulsen will make his collegiate debut on Saturday when he gets the ball to start the game.


Infield Returns
The Bulldogs return three quarters of their infield from a season ago. Corner infielders Crosby Jones and Noah Mitchell return, as well as shortstop Tilo Skole.


McCarthy Power
Outfielder Ryan McCarthy returns for his final season after having one of the biggest power years a season ago. He finished the 2021 season with 11 home runs to go along with 13 doubles and two triples. The 11 long balls were the most since Drew Ellis hit 12 home runs in 2015.


New Man in Center
The Bulldogs will have a new man in center this season as Wesley Lane takes over as the starter in center. Lane hit .269 in 18 games a season ago.


Costa Takes Over at Second
Transfer Dylan Costa enters the season as the starter at second base. He is known for his defense after not making an error in 83 chances last season.


Hutchins Earns Weekend Spot
Ben Hutchins, who served as the backup catch last season, has earned a spot in the weekend rotation. He may still see time as a designated hitter and behind the plate.


Two-Sport Dogs
This year's team will feature a pair of two-sport athletes, both members of the football team. Ryan McCarthy (wide receiver) is joined by  Dominick Poole (Defensive Back) on the team this year.


McCarthy Named Preseason All-SoCon
Senior outfielder Ryan McCarthy was named a Preseason First-Team All-Southern Conference selection by the head coaches.


CWS Comes Through The Joe
In each of the last two seasons played (2019, 2021), one of the team's that played in the CWS Championship Series played a game at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park during the regular season. In 2019, national runner-up Michigan played a three-game series in Charleston in February, while defending national champion Mississippi State played a midweek game at The Joe in May.


CWS Coaching Staff
All three members of the Bulldog coaching staff appeared in the College World Series during their playing days. Head Coach Tony Skole delivered the game-winning RBI against Cal State Fullerton for the Bulldogs in the 19900 CWS. Assistant Blake Cooper was an All-American on South Carolina's 2010 National Championship team, while assistant Zach Lucas made a pair of appearances in Omaha while playing at Louisville.


On Deck
The Bulldogs play their only road during the early part of the season as they drive to North Charleston to face Charleston Southern on Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.
