How it Happened
  • The Citadel got an early grip on the game thanks to the early scoring of Tyler Moffe and David Maynard, leading 18-10 before Mercer got on a run to bring it within reach at 20-19.
  • The Bulldogs regained control, with Moffe sending the team into halftime with a three in the closing seconds to take a 37-30 lead into intermission.
  • Though The Citadel scored the opening bucket to start the second to lead by nine, the Bears were resilient, clawing their way back into the game and finally gaining the lead at 50-48 with under 12 minutes remaining.
  • Mercer led 58-55 before the Bulldogs strung together a 6-0 run to go back up 61-58. The Bears' last threat was a Shawn Walker Jr. layup to tie the game at 63-63 with three minutes to play. It would be the Bears' last field goal of the contest.
  • Hayden Brown, who was held to just eight points by this point, came alive to score six of the Bulldogs' last eight points. He put the team back up with a layup on the ensuing possession, then seized on an empty Bears possession with another layup.
  • The Citadel again held Mercer on the next possession, with David Maynard sent to the line to make both his free throws on a one-and-one with 24 seconds remaining.
  • The Bears got one free throw to go in on their next trip. On the inbounds, Stephen Clark completed a full-court pass to Brown who dunked it on off the fast break to seal the win.
