CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's head soccer coach Ciaran Traquair chimed in during the halfway point of his team's spring season. So far the Bulldogs have had three days of competition, bookended by meetings with Charleston Southern and a doubleheader against USC Beaufort and Limestone slotted in between.

The Bulldogs have covered a lot of ground with a small, but mighty roster, being competitive in every matchup to date. On Mar. 2, The Citadel welcomed Charleston Southern to campus as the two exchanged scores in a 1-1 friendly. The Buccaneers' lone goal came off a penalty kick. Coach Traquair's team returned from spring break playing USC Beaufort and Limestone on Mar. 26. The Bulldogs pulled ahead twice against the Sand Sharks in the 60-minute contest, only for USCB to counter each time with equalizers towards a 2-2 draw. An early Saints score was the lone difference in the latter matchup. The squad most recently paid back Charleston Southern with a visit to the North Charleston campus Mar. 30.

The Citadel is tasked with breathing new life into a unit that fielded 12 upperclassmen and graduate students during the program's 10-win fall season. While grabbing a few wins this spring is important, Coach Traquair has stressed the development and exposure of his younger players as a priority going into the summer.

"The spring is ultimately about introducing younger players and developing your system of play. I have been pleased with the commitment and enthusiasm of our group, especially with numbers being unusually low for a spring season. We challenge the girls with the task of learning the principles of our play, and to try and cement their position as we plan for a large group of newcomers in the fall. For some on our roster, the spring minutes are the most they have had since club soccer and we encourage them to take full advantage of the opportunity to compete. This is a young group but they need to be able to set the standard and raise expectations for the fall. We have progressed every year since I have arrived here in 2016. We want that to always be our target, get better than the previous year, and use this off season portion to enhance your standing within the group.
