CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel football's first scrimmage of the season was controlled by the defense as the unit did not allow the offense into the end zone.
The play of the defense was aided by penalties and fumbles from the offensive side of the ball.
"The defense played with more energy today," said head coach
Brent Thompson. "They seized the momentum early and did not allow the offense to take it back. As a team, we need to find a way to recover and take the momentum. We have been preaching all camp to win the next play.
"I saw a lot of good things out and saw plenty of things that I didn't like. We are still a few weeks from playing our first game so we have time to make these corrections."
Scrimmage Highlights
- The defense got off to a quick start as they forced a three-and-out on each of the first five possessions.
- The offense was able to get the ball going on their next possession. Javonte Graves-Billips kept his fee through the hole and spun out of a tackle for a big gain.
- Braden Walker carried the bulk of the load from the B-Back position, carrying 11 times.
- Defensive back Carson Walter delivered several big hits throughout the scrimmage.
- The offense was able to put together a long drive, but a hit near the goal line forced a fumble that was recovered by Caleb Deveaux.
- Kickers Zach Sterr and Ben Barnes were able to connect on their field goal attempts.
The Bulldogs will be off on Sunday before returning to practice Monday morning.
