Bulldogs Drop First Midweek Contest

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel dropped its first baseball game of the season Tuesday afternoon, falling 4-1 to Charleston Southern inside Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning as Noah Mitchell sparked a two-out rally with a double to left center. Two batters later, Wells Sykes drove in Mitchell with a line-drive double through the left side.
  • The Bucs tied the game in the fourth inning as a leadoff hit batter came in to score on a base hit to left center by JC Agard.
  • CSU took the lead in the sixth inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error and came in to score on a base hit off the bat of Bryce Brock. Casey Asman drove in the second with a sacrifice fly, and the third run scored on a wild pitch.

  • The Bulldogs got strong pitching throughout the game, allowing just two earned runs and striking out 10.
  • Will Holmes made his first career start, allowing just one run on three hits and four strikeouts.
  • Yates Bland (0-1) suffered the loss in his collegiate debut after surrendering three runs, one earned, on two hits over 1.0 innings.
  • Conner Cummiskey allowed one hit and struck out two in his one inning of work.
  • Ethan Fewell retired all three hitters he faced, including two strikeouts.
  • Chace Cooper and Gant Startling also threw shutout innings.
  • Daniel Padysak (1-0) threw five shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six, to pick up the victory.
  • Sawyer Reeves led the offense with a pair of hits, while Wells Sykes drove in the only run with a double.

The Bulldogs return to the diamond Feb. 24-26 as they welcome Lehigh to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The series opener is set for 3 p.m. on Friday.
