Martin Sets Career High Against Mercer

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel lost to the Mercer Bears (22-25, 21-25, 22-25) on Thursday night at McAlister Field House. Jess Martin achieved a career-high in digs.
 
Jess Martin set a career-high in digs with 25 against the Bears, surpassing her previous best of 18. Martin leads the team with 182 digs.
 
Rachel Reininger and Jordyn Sims led The Citadel with nine kills each, followed by Gwen Berry at seven.
 
Lydia Larson contributed 16 assists, while Mia Watson added 13.
 
Lara Matta led the Bears with 12 kills.
 
Set 1
The Citadel took an early 4-1 lead over Mercer with a kill from Reininger and three attack errors from the Bears. Kills from Alexa Psotka, Berry, Sims, and an attack error from Mercer increased the Bulldogs' lead to 13-8. Mercer responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 13-13. The Citadel led 22-19 late in the first set with a kill from Sims, but Mercer turned the set around with a 6-0 run to win it 25-22.
 
Set 2
Two kills from Sims and a kill from Berry gave The Citadel an early 9-7 lead in the second set. Back-to-back kills by the Bears tied the set at 13-13. The Bulldogs held a three-point lead at 19-16 thanks to a kill from Berry and a service ace from Martin. The Citadel maintained a late 20-18 advantage over Mercer, but Mercer made a late push with a 7-1 run to win the set at 25-21.
 
Set 3
Mercer led The Citadel 6-2 early in the third set, but the Bulldogs tied it after a 4-0 run, highlighted by a kill from Savannah Freeman to make it 6-6. Mercer responded with two service aces, and The Citadel committed a service error, giving the Bears a 12-7 advantage. Back-to-back kills by Freeman and a service ace from Lippelgoos tied the score at 16-16. Mercer took the lead again at 19-17, but The Citadel answered with a 3-0 run, including two kills from Sims, to go ahead 20-19. Reininger's two late kills tied the set at 22-22, but Mercer would go on a 3-0 run to secure the set and match at 25-22.
