CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel lost 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 10-25, 15-25) to Furman on Friday afternoon inside McAlister Field House.
The Citadel matched its season high with seven service aces against the Paladins.
Mia Watson led the team with two aces.
Gwen Berry led the Bulldogs with a match-high 12 kills, followed by
Rachel Reininger with eight, and
Sam Barnes with six, which is a season high for Barnes. Barnes also contributed two total blocks.
Luci Lippelgoos and
Jordyn Sims each finished with two total blocks for The Citadel. Lippelgoos now has a season total of 22 solo blocks.
Lydia Larson tallied 17 assists, while
Mia Watson contributed 13.
Brooke Scheffler led the Paladins with 10 kills and three service aces.
Set 1
The Citadel jumped to an early 6-2 lead over Furman, thanks to kills from
Alexa Psotka, a kill, and a service ace from Reininger. The Paladins gained the lead over the Bulldogs with a 5-0 scoring run. The Bulldogs' lead expanded to as much as five points after an attack error by Furman and a service ace from
Jess Martin, making it 16-11. Furman fought back to tie the set at 18-18, but a kill from Psotka and an attack error by Furman made it 20-18, Bulldogs. The Paladins made a late push to tie the set at 21-21, but it wouldn't be enough as The Citadel captured the first set at 25-22.
Set 2
The Paladins started the second set with an early 5-3 lead over The Citadel, but back-to-back kills from Psotka and Reininger tied the set at 5-5. Furman increased their lead to four points at 14-10 with consecutive kills. The Bulldogs trailed 18-12, but back-to-back kills from Sims reduced the gap to 18-14. Furman kept the set out of the Bulldogs' reach as the Paladins went on a late run to win the set 25-16.
Set 3
Furman held an eight-point lead over The Citadel at 11-3 to start the third set. Furman extended their lead to 19-5 and eventually won the set 25-10.
Set 4
The Citadel maintained an early 3-2 lead thanks to a kill and an ace from Lippelgoos. Furman took the lead at 8-4 with a 4-0 scoring run. A kill from
Savannah Freeman narrowed the gap to six points, making it 15-9. Four late kills from Freeman, Barnes, and two from Sims weren't enough as Furman finished the match at 25-15.
