The Citadel Completes Series Sweep Over Rival VMI, Downs Keydets 11-8

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel completed the weekend sweep over VMI 11-8, riding a five-run third inning on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened
  • Travis Elliott scored the first run of the game for the Bulldogs with a safety squeeze, scoring Phillips Daniels from third to make it 1-0.
  • The Bulldogs added their second run of the first with an RBI fielder's choice from Thomas Rollauer, scoring TJ Anderson.
  • VMI tied the game in the third inning at 2-2 with an RBI single and an RBI double.
  • The Citadel erupted for five runs in the third inning. Lane Tobin began with an RBI single that scored Elliott, reclaiming the lead for the Bulldogs at 3-2.
  • Tobin put himself in a scoring position after a stolen base, setting up Garrett Dill to bring him in with an RBI double down the right field line, making it 4-2.  
  • The Bulldogs went up 5-2 after the balk, scoring Dill from third.
  • Matthew Lively kept the momentum going for the Bulldogs with a double to left field, which Aryan Patel followed with an RBI double to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 6-2, giving them a four-run advantage.  
  • Phillips Daniels hit the fifth double of the inning, scoring Patel from third to make it 7-2 after three innings.  
  • VMI tacked on three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to narrow the Bulldogs' lead to 7-5.
  • The Bulldogs scored two runs in the seventh inning with an RBI double from Dill, his second of the game, and Lively drove Dill in from second with an RBI single up the middle to make it 9-5.
  • VMI's Grayson Fitzwater hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to make it a three-run game at 9-6.
  • On his third hit of the game, Tobin drove in Anthony Hausner and Elliott, increasing the Bulldogs' lead to five runs at 11-6 in the bottom of the eighth.  
  • VMI scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, thanks to a two-run RBI triple from Bradley Garner, making the score 11-8.
