Poppell Hits Grand Slam; Bulldogs Take the Series Against the Broncos

KALAMAZOO, MICH. – Rhyder Poppell hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning, contributing to a nine-run rally that propelled the Bulldogs to an 11-3 victory over the Broncos, clinching the series.

How It Happened
  • The Bulldogs began the first inning with a fielder's choice RBI by Noah Cadiz, making the score 1-0.
  • Western Michigan tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning with a solo home run from Dylan Nevar.
  • The Broncos gained a one-run lead at 2-1 in the fourth inning, thanks to an RBI single from Nevar.
  • The Citadel scored nine runs in the top of the fifth inning, beginning with an error made by the Broncos that allowed Lane Tobin to score.  
  • Phillips Daniels doubled to left field, scoring Aryan Patel. This led to a TJ Anderson RBI double down the left field line, which scored Daniels from second.  
  • Anthony Hausner laid down the squeeze bunt that allowed Anderson to score.
  • With the bases loaded, Rhyder Poppell hit a grand slam to right field, extending the Bulldogs' lead to 10-2 in the top of the fifth.  
  • The Bulldogs scored their 11th run of the game in the sixth inning on a Hausner RBI single up the middle, extending The Citadel's lead to nine runs.  
  • Western Michigan plated a run in the bottom of the ninth from an RBI single to center to make it 11-3.
