NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel (2-3-1, 0-0-0 SoCon) faltered in the team's return to the road at local cross-city rival Charleston Southern (1-3-3, 0-0-0 Big South), surrendering an early one-goal advantage to the Buccaneers en route to an eventual 4-2 loss Thursday afternoon at CSU Soccer Field.
"Probably our poorest overall performance of the season," head coach
Ciaran Traquair said. "We started the game well but didn't really get control as the game went into second half and we made some really poor decisions on and off the ball. Some good lessons for the group on what SoCon matches will be like if we aren't at our best. We look to get back to winning ways at the weekend."
Offensively, the Bucs outperformed the Bulldogs in both shots (11-to-7) and shots-on-goal (7-to-6) while also racking up a 3-to-1 edge in corner kicks. Initially, The Citadel surged to a quick lead off a successful header from
Alice Williamson in the second minute of play, knocking in the goal courtesy of
Elisa Fuentes on a corner kick set piece. Charleston Southern equalized just as the first half concluded before tacking on scores in the 62', 74' and 77', jumping out to a commanding 4-1 advantage. Finally,
Didi Turay found the back of the net in the 83' to bring the Bulldogs back within striking distance.
Individually, Williamson paced the crew with two total shots, both on goal. Meanwhile,
Lizzy Passwaters allowed all four goals with two saves across just over 76 minutes of competition before
Zoe Santos stepped in for the final near-14 minutes of action, notching one save.
