CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel Athletics announced the addition of Matt Shimko on Wednesday afternoon as the department's new Assistant Director of Athletic Communications.

Shimko will serve as the primary communications contact for men's basketball, women's soccer, men's tennis, and track and field.

Prior to joining The Citadel, Shimko spent two years at Jacksonville University as an Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant, working with baseball, volleyball, beach volleyball, and cross country. He earned his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Jacksonville in 2025.

Before his time with the Dolphins, Shimko worked in the front office of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, where he gained valuable experience in professional sports operations.

A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Shimko was a four-year starter on the football team at Monmouth College. He earned All-Conference honors twice and served as team captain for two conference championship seasons. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Business Administration.

He is the son of Michael Shimko and Stacy Hathaway and has three siblings: Ashleigh, JJ, and his twin, Michael.
