CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Touchdown Club officially announced The Citadel student-athlete Maurice Bonneau Jr. as the organization's selection for the 2026 Defender of the Nation Award per a release Wednesday afternoon, distinguishing the fifth-year defensive lineman as the first representative from The Citadel to secure the national recognition.
"Maurice Bonneau Jr. embodies the toughness, discipline and selfless leadership we value at The Citadel," The Citadel head coach Maurice Drayton said. "He represents what it means to be a true defender, both on and off the field. We are proud to see him recognized with the Defender of the Nation Award by the Bronko Nagurski Charlotte Touchdown Club."
Founded just over a decade ago ahead of the 2016 season, the Defender of the Nation Award annually honors a defensive football player from one of the nation's service academies and senior military colleges as well as top ROTC programs including: Air Force Academy, Appalachian State University, Auburn University, The Citadel, Coast Guard Academy, Michigan State, University of Mississippi, Naval Academy, Norwich University, University of South Carolina, Texas A&M University, Villanova University, Virginia Tech, VMI and West Point.
Criteria for selection include academic, athletic and community achievements, but most importantly exceptional leadership qualities on the football field, in the classroom and in the community. The recipient must also exhibit a high standard of integrity by leading through example.
"First off, I would like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," Bonneau said. "Second, I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates and coaches for continuing to push me and demanding my best. This wouldn't be possible without them. It's an honor to win this award."
A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Bonneau has served as a lynchpin on the defensive line over the past four years, consistently contributing during the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons before emerging as a starter for the 2026 campaign. Primarily threatening opposing offenses off the edge, the fifth-year has logged action in 34 games for his collegiate career with eight starts, racking up a total 51.0 tackles -- including 24.0 solo takedowns -- with 12.0 tackles-for-loss and 7.5 sacks, not to mention a pair of forced fumbles plus one fumble recovery.
During his four-year stint as a cadet-athlete, Bonneau managed to garner the respect of both the Bulldogs' coaching staff and his fellow teammates, earning distinction as one of the program's 2025 military team captains. Following graduation from The Citadel in December 2026 with a degree in construction engineering, Bonneau plans to commission into the United States Army Reserve.
