CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Citadel Bulldogs (2-2) clinched a 4-3 win over Marshall (2-2) on Friday evening at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Jayden Williams and
Miles Barbrey kicked things off in the first inning with back-to-back singles, and
Zach Hunt drove in the opening run with a groundout.
Phillips Daniels hit a solo home run in the third.
Hunt added to the lead in the fifth with an RBI double, increasing The Citadel's lead to 4-0.
A two-run homer down the right-field line from Ethan Murdoch in the eighth inning shrank The Citadel's lead to 4-2. The Thundering Herd capitalized on a wild pitch and a groundout to score their final run.
Daniels went 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs, and an RBI. Hunt collected two doubles and an RBI.
Aryan Patel reached base twice, swiped two bases, and added an RBI.
On the mound,
Will Holmes pitched 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits, no runs and two walks while striking out a career-high nine, earning the win.
Michael Gibson pitched 3.1 innings, setting down five on strikes and securing his first career save. Gibson and Holmes combined for a season-high 14 strikeouts.
For Marshall, Bryce Blevins pitched 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, with three earned runs, and struck out eight batters in a loss. Davis Gunn threw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering three hits, no walks, and recording one strikeout. Charlie Krebs retired the only batter he faced in three pitches during the eighth.
The Bulldogs will face the Thundering Herd again on Saturday, Feb. 21, with the first pitch scheduled for 11 am inside Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
