Late Offense Propels Bulldogs to a 10-6 Victory Over Marshall

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Citadel (3-2) notched a 10-6 come-from-behind win over Marshall (2-3) on Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, ousting the Thundering Herd in a second-straight victory.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Zach Hunt along with a wild pitch from Marshall, allowing TJ Anderson to score.

Marshall responded in the top of the second with RBI singles from Cleary Simpson and Evan Bottone to tie the game at 2-2.

The Citadel reclaimed a 4-2 lead in the second inning with an RBI from Jayden Williams, scoring Matthew Lively. Williams then stole third base, and a throwing error by Marshall's catcher allowed him to come home.

Marshall jumped to a 6-4 advantage in the fourth inning sparked by a three-run homer from Bottone.

An RBI triple by Garrett Fulmer cut the Thundering Herd's lead to 6-5 in the fifth inning. Then, in the sixth, The Citadel knotted the game on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Hunt.

Aryan Patel gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 edge with an RBI single to right field, scoring Lively from second. On the next pitch, Patel stole second, and a poor throw by Marshall's pitcher allowed him to score from second, pushing The Citadel up by a pair. A crucial fielding error by Marshall on a pop-up to third base let Williams score, helping the Bulldogs take advantage of a three-run seventh inning.

Hunt's solo homer in the eighth extended the lead to 10-6, good for his first dinger of the season and contributing to his season-high three RBIs.

Phillips Daniels recorded a season-high three hits, including a double. Garrett Fulmer collected two hits and a triple, driving in a run. Williams contributed four runs scored and three stolen bases.

On the mound, Ben Brash pitched 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit and recording one strikeout. Bryce Coulter started the game and pitched 3.0 innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Jacob Deacon threw 3.0 innings of relief, allowing one earned run while striking out two.

For Marshall, Drew Harlow pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits and striking out five. Blaine Albright took the loss, giving up four runs, three earned, in 1.2 innings pitched, with three walks and one strikeout.

"I thought we played much cleaner, more disciplined baseball today. We won the game yesterday, but we made a lot of mental mistakes. Today, I felt it was cleaner. We played good defense," said head coach Russell Triplett. "We probably walked too many guys, but I thought we were much better at the plate, with an improved approach early on, and then we got some big two-strike, two-out hits late in the game. I also liked the way we ran the bases, and our bullpen was good. We got into some trouble, but they were able to get the next guy out after free bases, so we limited the free passes. Overall, a good day for the dogs."

Next, the Bulldogs face Army at 1 pm ET on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
